Misleading? yes, to a point. At least Sony makes the designation between 1080 and 1080p on applicaple products (as well as noting 1080 still image for still cameras capable of HD output).

And regarding the resolution of consumer hd camcorders... There are no competitor (or Sony cams for that matter) that will do full 1080p despite any marketing skew or flashy stickers on the product itself. If a product rep says otherwise I would welcome you to challenge those claims. While JVC has claimed 1080p recording for sometime, and now Canon claim their HD camcorders are 1080p, they are not. All consumer options in this range are in fact recording interlaced footage. Some merely trick the consumer as they will output 1080p... what they don't tell you is that 1080p is simply a re-interlaced signal, which is really not the same as progressive at all.

Bottom line, while misleading... all this is just that fantastic marketing twist that we have come to love/hate in the CE industry.

inside_the_machine

Comments on Sony HDR-TG5 makes world's smallest Full HD camcorder smaller, adds GPS

Does this thing really have a built-in 16GB of storage? My TG1 has no built-in memory as stated in the article, and was packaged with a meager 4GB Memory Stick. It cost me approximately $150 to buy a 16GB memory stick just to have enough capacity for my last vacation. In that case, I also have to question whether the TG5's stabilization truly is optical, as the TG1 is digital. Nonetheless, not enough improvements to make it drool-worthy. Only if they've improved the camera's ability to shoot in dim light would I consider upgrading.

rico

Comments on Sony HDR-TG5 makes world's smallest Full HD camcorder smaller, adds GPS

"and a 10x O-P-T-I-C-A-L-L-Y stabilized zoom exposing a 2.4 megapixel CMOS sensor"

Sony's specs indicate that it is uses regular "SteadyShot™" image stabilization which means it is electronic just like the previous model that you own.

Sony does however list it has having "16GB embedded memory
16GB1 of embedded flash memory gives you the ability to record up to two hours of high definition video at the highest quality settings."

I think engadget may have it wrong here too regarding the OPTICAL image stabilization - much like the original article which indicated that "Sony debuts $1,000 GPS-packin' HDR-TG5V 1080p Handycam" and went on to state "capable of logging full 1080p clips"
(Search google for this title if you want to read the original article)

Basically I think engadget, like most people, were mislead by Sony's use of the term "Full HD" and I agree with 'inside_the_machine' that Sony are not the only manufacturer guilty of this, however I still don't think it is right if it misleads people...

10101

Comments on Sony HDR-TG5 makes world's smallest Full HD camcorder smaller, adds GPS

BEWARE of a MAJOR ITEM missing....
