I was expecting the Magic to be roughly the same size as the G1 only thinner because it doesn't have a keyboard.

It's tremendously inferior to the G1, except for the camera which is a mild improvement (3.2 --> 5), only in the US. It'd be exiting if HTC switched entirely to Android and made it its home platform. As is right now the closest competitor Android has is WinMo in the sense that both OSs are not connected whit the hardware that runs them.

In the other hand, Nokia, RIM, Palm and Apple all engineer both the hardware and the software so they are able to tightly integrate and optimize both sides together. I think this is an advantage and that in the long run will serve to differentiate them in a distinct and positive way from Android and WinMo handsets.

As is right now it is hard to tell. The Smart Phone wars just barely got started and once Palm joins the rat race the group of major players will be complete. the 1st thing that HTC said when showing this phone is that this is a prototype model AND that those buttons are only placeholders for the production model buttons (ones in the website). Having said that, I do like the thin button design of this phone :)
