"Just because the townspeople could not stop a government from imposing surveillance cameras does not mean that the townspeople now want to invite all scrutiny from any camera."<br><br>But, the bigger question is, what privacy is being intruded?  If it helps, maybe google should announce their camera will be passing by so the townspeople can stay inside during the few minutes it takes as the car passes.  The house is already mostly public domain... it is not cloaked. the people are not so much in the publc domain because you generally control how you interact in the world, and change actions accordingly... <br><br>It's not the house they object to being photographed, is it?  It's themselves, right? They were annoyed by the idea of thieves using the pictures to aid them into breaking into houses, not that I think it really makes sense but just because here in the UK there are CCTV camera's in town and city centres that doesn't mean we have them staring in people's houses and those images aren't generally available to the public which Google street maps is.<br><br>I guess because the govt. in the US can read anyones e-mail and listen in to any phone call, that means you all happily hand out copies of all the e-mails you send and recordings of all your personal phone calls ... It's not like the streets are littered with CCTV cams, it ain't like they're pointing right into our houses or following our individual movements.<br><br>As much as they get criticized, they have in fact helped with a lot of crime cases. I guess I shouldn't have said 'the fact that...' as I don't really have much proof. You do often see of situations where CCTV has helped, but the number of times CCTV has help probably pales in comparison to the number of times it hasn't. Oh well.<br><br>As for my location, I live in Leeds and yes, there are cameras all over the City, but I personally don't mind them being in the City. They don't hassle me, they don't cause me any inconvenience whatsoever. Get to the outskirts of the City and further, and the number of cameras drops to almost zero. There are none in or around my neighbourhood (other than private ones on shops and some people's gardens etc.) and it isn't a posh/upper class neighbourhood in the slightest.<br><br>If there are places where CCTV is set up in residential suburbs/estates/etc, then I could understand why people there would be against them. As it stands though, I don't see what the problem is - waste of government money? Can't be helped. That there is a group think, a combined IQ that is in operation whenever you get a group or mob together.  In fact, most people apparently coalesce using their baser instincts rather than their intellect, so you see angry mobs most frequently rather than those going from town to town aiding those less fortunate.  I wonder how many angry individuals you need before a mob of a given size becomes generally malicious.  I wonder how any individual can have such a strong need to belong that they turn into an ass.  I wonder, how much taking this world can handle before it turns into a world of mess.
