Purchase 500GB time capsule + Whatever (server grade) drive you want + external case.

Swap the drive inside your time capsule and put the drive that was in there in an external case.

Why swap? b/c the external is USB and internal is Sata connected through gigabit. I buy a lot of video on iTunes, and my 1 TB drive is already starting to get pretty full!

The thing I like about the MediaSmart Server is that it has FOUR hot-swappable hard drive bays, plus external ports that offer impressively scalable storage for a consumer device.

I'd probably not buy one, but having used Time Machine before, I can say unequivocally that there is nothing simpler on the market, and it seems to be quite reliable. This is what most people want. Why would you want your backup box to have wifi built-in? You just throw your backup server on your existing wireless router, and all your PCs back up to it. Need more storage? Buy a cheap 500gb external and plug in the USB, automatically added to your server space.

What would take the cake, hands down, is if the TC supported the ability to use its USB port specifically for the purpose of using an external drive to backup the TC's backup in a kind of quasi-RAID config.
