It would lead some to believe that it's referring to the network speed rather than generation of the phone. T-Mobile doesn't want people to start thinking that they're trying to hype a slower phone than the competition when AT&T (and even Verizon) is tossing around "3G" like it's the second coming.
It's exactly how Microsoft named the Xbox 360. They didn't want to name it the Xbox 2, because they knew the PS3 was on everyone's mind. They were aware of the fact that dumb consumers might see Xbox 2 as intrinsically inferior to the PS3 just because the PlayStation has a 3 after it, but the Xbox only has a 2. The route they went allows uninformed people see that they've both got 3+ in their title, so the consumers will figure they're the same generation console and about the same value - or that they Xbox 360 is even better because not only is it 3... it's 3 and 60.
You've got to realize that a lot of marketing is geared to the lowest common denominator. Not everyone reads Engadget and follows technology. They've got to try and keep things simple - or confuse the public in a way that benefits them.

Smacksmackums

Comments on T-Mobile market testing terrible names for the HTC Magic / Sapphire

"They don't want to confuse dimwitted consumers by tossing a G2 name into the mix. If that's the case, they should just call it something all together different.
