With little to no fanfare, ViewSonic has followed up its recently outed VT2230 with an all-too-similar VG2427. Said display packs a 24-inch panel, 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution, 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 300 nits of brightness, a height adjustable stand and hidden stereo speakers. Additionally, you'll find a 2-port USB hub, ECO mode for sucking down less energy (while idle, we presume) and a seductively slim bezel to boot. It's up for grabs right now for $499.
It's a nice saving on production. The screens are actually 23.5 inch, so the same pitch as the 16:10 24 inch-ers, so that means 10% cost saving on the panel. For American's who never watch foreign films, 16:9 is probably OK, but in Europe, we like to have the subtitles UNDER instead of OVER Naomi Watts her breasts. That's why the black bar of a 16:10 screen come in so handy! And for those few who WORK with computer screens instead of watch movies on them all the time, a decent vertical resolution is still best for the average Word document, web-page or Excel sheet.
How would a wider (16:10) monitor cause black bars on top/bottom so subtitles can be below the movie, as compared to a 16:9 ration? That doesn't make sense to me. Seems like a wider monitor (16:10) would eliminate the black bars.
16:10 isn't wider, it's taller. most films are 16:9 so a 16:10 screen would have bars.
I agree with Kraken. I'm getting tired of these 16:9 screens, especially for laptops. Consumers are thinking they are getting larger screens, when in reality they are not.
14.1" is now a 15.x" 15.4" is now 16.x 17" is now 18.x
It just keeps getting more deceptive. (i didn't know what the x was.)
I work in a college computer store and i've had a few design students proud of their 16.x screen, thinking they made a good move getting a size in between 15 and 17. That is until I tell them they actually got a shorter screen and will now have to deal with a significantly fewer pixels, especially for graphic design work (most of those screens are 1376x768, while good 15.4" screens will have 1440x900 and a good 17" will have a 1650x1050 or 1920x1200; granted these are HPs and they rarely have good screens). Thats why we want them to shop here.... (we are non-profit so there is no mark-up here)
Anyway, I do hate these 16:9 monitors. It's a great ratio for TV, but not for work.
Well, an 24" IPS panel at that price would be nice. After all, LG's got a e-IPS panel on the way and Dell has a much of nice PVAs and IPS monitors reasonably priced lying around.
Why is it that monitor makers seem to be taking our pixels away and then bragging about it, a couple years ago if someone was selling a 24" monitor, it was a given that the resolution was going to be 1920 X 1200. I WANT MY PIXELS BACK!
16:9 looks so much better than 16:10 16:10 would be phased out soon. All you 16:10 lovers, why dont you move back to 4:3 panels? Go, chase your pixels.
how does 16:9 looks better? you now have a smaller, and more cramped work space compared to a 16:10. You have to remember that monitors are generally for work, not watching movies.
anyone else remember those trapper keepers from the 80's with the airbrushed chrome ballbearings rolling over a sea of checkerboards and rainbow gayness? They look like the screen mock up for this monitor.
“Getting too close completely blurred what we saw to the point of incomprehension, but again, this shows a whole heap of potential that's fascinating to us.”

The stand looks ugly, why?
all ViewSonic stands looks bad actually.
...more of these stupid 16:9 monitors? No thanks. I'll stick with my 16:10.
Unfortunately, it looks to be a growing trend and we will eventually see 16:10 monitors being phased out.

Do 24-inch monitors even count for news these days? Let me know when I can go larger than 30.

Is it 120 mhz? (for 3D vision gaming...)
Whats up with that 90's demo image? I think they finally need to rebrand and ditch the birds...
No way. I've never bought a ViewSonic monitor but I always smile when I see those birds. Reminds me of my youth.
