There is just a lot of restrictions on what files. WMV is fine, obviously. Xvid/AC3 in an avi container works as well. But that's about it for the Xbox. PS3 has a couple more options. You can also do workarounds that transcode the video on the fly. Tversity is a popular one... but that requires using remote desktop to login to the WHS and install Tversity on there. It's not an elegant solution. It's actually really weak for something called "mediasmart". And the idea of it being "easy" has been long gone by the point where you need to use remote desktop to get into the server.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but there is even huge lag issues when you have media center running... When I use boot camp to get into Windows 7 and run media center, the performance is awful. I've read that this is due to cover art being stored on the server. The workaround is to install the art on the PC and the video file on the server.... this is just really messy. MS needs to do a lot of work to get this product working the way it is envisioned to work.

Kevo

Comments on

You can stream media fine without a PC running in between just not using the WMC interface on the xbox.

Dan Menapace

Comments on

First of all, it's too expensive!

Nuno Sousa

Comments on

ditto.

Paul a. RAID 5 requires matched drives and is much less flexible. You also end up with a usable copy of your data if your machine dies and you want to pull it off using a standard SATA connection. With a RAID 5 drive, you get only bits. Yes, it is every so slightly less efficient for reads, but for it's purpose as a NAS/backup solution, folder duplication is the better solution.

Paul

Comments on

RAID5 (distributed parity) can actually be better on read performance than RAID1 (mirror) depending on the controller and the number of drives in you RAID set. This is due to being able to actively read from more disks simultaneously. Three drive R5 would actively be reading blocks on all three drives where a two drive R1 may only read from 1 drive at a time depending on the controller). Write performance suffers greatly however as it requires 4 IO operations per write request; preread data, preread parity, rewrite data, rewrite parity versus two IO for R1 or R10 (mirror with stripe); write data disk1, write data disk2. R5 is less expensive to implement the same usable capacity with +3 drives as only the capacity of one drive is used for parity calculation. R1 or R10 has 100% overhead regardless of the number. Another catch is you can only lose one hard drive in R5 where in a larger RAID 10 you can potentially lose more than one drive and rebuild times in case of a failure are reduced. R5 is a very valid option and is the used very commonly in large SAN storage farms as it saves significant money while still retaining resiliency.

STEVE

Comments on

RAID5 would be a must for me with 4 hard discs. I've had 3 discs fail in the time I've been running my (custom build) media server, although only 2 proper failures - one just kept dropping out of the array, but worked fine on it's own (Samsung were great and replaced it anyway). You don't need matched drives for RAID5 at all. In fact, because you can only survive one disc failure, I was very paranoid, and didn't buy any matching discs in my setup, to try and minimise the chances of them failing together. I've got 3 brands of drives, and different models within the same brand as well.

asc99c

Comments on

I have this thing with 4, 2TB blades in it.

It runs like a charm.
