Secondly garbage data from people who take a puff running to the bus or just doing exercise is a possible problem, but probably not enough to skew the statistics.

There will be some obvious hotspots like schools and places where people do exercise, but i'd be interested to see the wider picture. If they really get this to take off, it needs to be something that is both free and widely injected into the public healthcare system. People will not pay for it, and this simply won't work if it's just a sign-up trial. It needs to be an opt-out service that is put into every inhaler on the market.

Josh

Comments on Researcher plans to use GPS to study asthma triggers

I disagree, it shouldnt be an opt out program. As an asthmatic, I would have no problem opting INTO this program. However, I would hate to find out that there is some hidden GPS tracking device in my inhaler, even if it was in no way tied to me as a specific person.

If they want a massive study, then they should be having doctors encouraging people to opt in, having pharmacists ask when someone gets an inhaler if they are interested in signing up.

Simply sticking GPS devices in inhalers without informing someone would be a very improper move, and a huge violation of privacy.

Joshua Walters

Comments on Researcher plans to use GPS to study asthma triggers

way to make asthma look fun.

Saad

Comments on Researcher plans to use GPS to study asthma triggers

I was under the impression that asthma wasn't a point source problem. If you are allergic to something specific (cats, ragweed) then you avoid those things, but otherwise it's not a specific place or what goes on there that gives you asthma. The Barcelona example is a rare condition rather than the norm. And besides asthma symptoms can occur long after exposure when the person may or may not still be in the same location.
