I can understand why other ex47x owners are annoyed that they can't this, but do you really not get why? The whole MediaSmart concept was to make a system easy for everyday users. If those who did not upgrade their processor/RAM see an "optional" upgrade that offers these features, they're going to try and install it - then it's not going to work and they are going to dump on HP for that. Even if the update checked your hardware, this would encourage non-technical users to void their warranty and try to upgrade their processor. While I can certainly handle this chore, I can see many other people screwing it up. Warranty voiding aside, they're going to try and go to HP to fix the problem, then resent them if they can't.

So yeah, I wish I could get these, but I can't blame HP for not offering them on the ex47x models. I can, however, blame HP for not making the ex47x hardware stronger in the first place. All in all, I love my MediaSmart server. And I appreciate that HP does a lot to try and fill in the feature gaps. I'm happy enough with what it already does that I think I can hold tight until the next version of WHS comes out and then upgrade to a new box. for a saavy user, there are other ways to get these kind of features, anyways,

Michael Posch

Comments on Firmware update brings file conversion, iPhone access to HP's MediaSmart ex485 / ex487

The online backup over at http://www.myotherdrive.com is nice, too.
