I brought a G1 over to AT&T (because EDGE on the iPhone at the time wasn't all that bad) and sincerely regret it today. EDGE is continually getting slower and slower and the device is becoming less functional because of it. So slow in fact that I'm switching carriers.

If you're thinking about bring a G1 to AT&T, DONT'T! It's open source-ish? Yeah, that really helps when there's really only one phone on the market that uses it.

Seriously, there's no way I'd buy an Android phone if it doesn't bring something else to the table that other Phone OS like Windows Mobile can't do.

iPhone OS = available on pretty much one phone, the iPhone
Android OS = available on pretty much one phone, the G1

For all the uproar about Android, they really need to pick up the pace and actually release some damn phones that use the OS.

"If/maybe/when/might/prototypes". None of that crap matters to consumers when there's practically NO OPTIONS available.

I'm not saying Windows Mobile is awesome, but from what I've read, I do think it might be the most compatible/functional. I also think that the next couple generations of top end hardware (beyond the ones that were shown this year at CES) will finally start reaching the point where there's VERY little graphical slowdown on smartphones running WM (I was going to buy an Xperia X1, but then I saw the lag in it's transitioning on video and decided to hold off on buying a high end phone until one or two more generations passed).

Just saying, right now, all the noise about Android is getting really ridiculous when they're not putting out any hardware products to go with it.

Robrain

Comments on Acer says it'll "likely" have one Android phone this year

Yeah I was there too... thinking about an X1. (yes, I pay for the extra data capability through Tmo to allow tethering)

That's something you can't do with an iPhone unless you "jailbreak" it.

BTW, I have a used iPhone for sale. It's one of the original ones. Turned out it was cheaper to get a G1 and break the AT&T contract than it was to upgrade to the iPhone 3G. There were initially some things I missed about the iPhone, but the main thing I missed was completely cured by YouMail.com. And GoogleVoice may eventually be even better than YouMail.

Although some of the programs I have for my G1 were not available through their official market, I didn't have to "jailbreak" my phone to install them from other sources. That's enough right there to keep me from going back to the iPhone, although I would be happier with Android if I could get better 3G coverage than Tmo gives.
--
http://www.chl-tx.com

TX CHL Instructor
