err, maybe where you live, lovin my 3G here never get a dropped call and service is great, can't say a carrier sucks, its all geographically based. Customer service is great, prices are great, and phone selection? all of used to have sidekicks, and i must say the one thing the sidekick did far and away better than all 3 was IMing. i would literally stay connected for weeks at a time and other apps and services wouldn't falter at all. also, when losing connection, it would simply suspend the conversation, allowing messages sent while DCed to go through once signal has been reestablished. my G1 will constatly disconnect me from AIM and Yahoo messenger and will wipe any conversations I've had or messages that have been sent, forcing me to reconnect.

That said, the G1 is pretty close. It has a similar form factor and a similar keyboard, though both are slightly worse than the Sidekick's. The missing panel on the left hand side is a slight downgrade for two-handed typing, but honestly I never even notice it's gone, and the keyboard's keys are slightly shallower but otherwise laid out and function exactly like the Sidekick's. The existing software isn't any more robust than the $10 mp3 players at the check aisles in Walmart. The QWERTY keyboard is unmatched, IME. the trackball and radial menu may seem antiquated, but it's very fast. There is a lot to be said for tactile button based UIs. But, it does need a few things to get me to go back to it:
1. youtube streaming (check)
2. 3G (check)
3. wifi, for home use (bzzzzZZZ)
4. improved media player features (?????)
5. improved web experience (?????)

Also, I have no complaints of T-mobile, really. The one one one one GRIPE i have about sidekick's is that they're marketed towards teens and they are SUCH an awesome messaging device, one of the best platforms for aim / text etc that I have used.. but WHY IS THERE ONLY ROOM FOR 100 TEXT MESSAGES? THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

WHY can't they be able to hold more then 100 text messages?
