You've also got a 3.2 megapixel AF camera with LED flash, microSD expansion (T-Mobile throws a 1GB card in the box), video recording and playback (including YouTube access), stereo Bluetooth, quadband EDGE, and HSDPA 2100 for high-speed coverage when you're galavanting around Europe.

nope no wifi.

bummer

kenneth

Comments on T-Mobile Sidekick LX 2009 video hands-on

Sidekicks have come a long way and aren't bad phones, but unfortunately they aren't keeping up with the advances in cell phones. Their download catalog currently sucks; you're stuck with whatever they decide to create, and they haven't bothered with a Facebook or Twitter application for current Sidekicks, and you know how long those sites have been popular. There's a MySpace app that's OK. There's little to no support for your Sidekick after you've bought it - you might be lucky to get one update that maybe fixes stability issues, but you're not getting OS updates with new features - you'll be paying for them via downloads, sometimes monthly. (Currently, they charge $2.99 PER MONTH for an RSS feeder that can only handle FIVE feeds at once.) It can also be a little slow and buggy, and the web browser is still just using WAP sites. It's a good mid-range phone, but compared to the new smartphones, they end up looking very last-gen. I own a Sidekick Slide and I like it a lot, it was great when I got it a year ago.

And T-Mobile SUCKS. Horrible all around. I've had Verizon, Sprint and AT&T and I have nothing good to say about anything while I was with them. T-Mobile's customer care has been ranked consistently at the top. My experience with them has been nothing but pleasant. Crappy phone selection? I suppose the new LX, the 8900, G1 and Memoir are really garbage phones. Sure their 3G coverage isn't the best but it's new and it expanding faster than ever, I've pretty much been coast to coast for the past year and I haven't had any signal issues on top of the fact that T-Mobile also unlocks your phone for FREE and lets me use other SIM cards when I'm outside the country so that I don't have to pay roaming fees.

se30chris

Comments on T-Mobile Sidekick LX 2009 video hands-on

@ JPN And T-Mobile SUCKS. I have some friends who moved from up north and they tell me T-Mobile is fantastic. Down here though, when I had them as my carrier I could not even get signal inside my apartment, I had to go into the main parking lot to really get a good signal. I went with Verizon after my contract went up. Everything is awesome with them, except for the phones but I can deal with that for now. I know they must be feeling the pinch with all this great new cell technology being picked up be everyone else because they started offering me upgrades long before my 2 years are up. Course that might be due to the drop in retail sales all around.

Col. Here's my experience - customer service was awesome. The OS on the device is great, but the hardware was always lacking (bad screen, crappy camera). For the OS, it seems like they always thought of everything, it was very user-friendly. On the hardware plus side, once you learn the device, all the buttons become second nature and it's easy to multitask on it. I hate their whole app store approach. Paying monthly for things like RSS (and myspace IIRC) is a crime. But the stock AIM and email apps were nice (browser blew though). It also has the best handheld QWERTY keyboard I have ever used on any device. Ever. That keyboard is absolute perfection.

That said, the G1 is pretty close. It has a similar form factor and a similar keyboard, though both are slightly worse than the Sidekick's. The missing panel on the left hand side is a slight downgrade for two-handed typing, but honestly I never even notice it's gone, and the keyboard's keys are slightly shallower but otherwise laid out and function exactly like the Sidekick's. You don't have to nuke the features to sell it to teens. Also, T-mobile, while good for some, isn't the greatest nor biggest network in the US.
