Though it's about five or six notches short of a robust software suite, the hardware is there, it's adaptable, and you don't have to type your notes. I've had one for six months now and it really makes any palm device look pathetic for not including a more functional stylus with similar capabilities. I mean, you can print out your own paper for this puppy and your pen becomes its own OCR machine. It really brings the phrase "all-in-one" to a more appreciable design. I type 70 wpm and miniature keyboards just don't do it for me. All this and, oh yeah, everything is synced with the audio at the time each penstroke was made. Though these "pencasts" appearing on livescribes website seem to have little functionality beyond the classroom, it really seems like some creative animation projects (interactive storytelling or complex interactive puzzles) will be the next step for this media, provided livescribe unlocks some more basic techniques for rapid navigation and scripted/sequenced playback of recorded penstrokes.

bob dobbins

Comments on Ask Engadget: Best mobile note-taking device?

The iPhone for sure. Cheap, strong battery life, big screen, great ergonomics and one of the best UIs ever. Getting it to integrate with other systems can be a PITA, but then that is not what it is designed for. It's autonomous. Sadly, mine get too little use lately due to my desire for integration / easy synchronization. I have no idea what to use instead. It changes the way you think of taking notes. When you takes notes normally, you simply can't take down all the things people are saying. With the pulse, you don't bother to try to write everything down. You tell the page (I know sounds odd, but watch a demo and you will understand) to start recording, then when something important is said, you simply jot down a note on the paper somewhere. Then later when you want to play back what happened, you simply touch the notes that you jotted down, and the pen will play back the section of audio that happened when you jotted the note (actually a few configurable seconds before). It works great.

Add to this that it is java based and has other applications. It even has a translator (demo when I last looked). The plan is to even allow you to write your own programs. Pretty darn cool.
