I have backed up everything I have purchased/recorded from tv, etc since I was a kid. I still have one of those VHS copy protection defeaters from the early 1990s. I remember fondly using it to copy VHS movies rented from Video Giant. I've backed up lots of DVDs using software that was free and is still easily available to anyone with an internet connection, and I can easily backup my Blu-Ray discs (to an hdd. can't afford a Blu-Ray burner). The media companies just can't wrap their heads around the fact that if a person can hear and see something, they can make a copy of it. If they have a general use PC, then they can make a perfect copy of it. No matter what DRM scheme they create or law they lobby through the congress, this is an immutable fact of life that will continue to reshape the media business whether anyone likes it or not.

Billy

Comments on RealDVD ripping software heads to court, fair use advocates on pins and needles

My hopes aren't high for anybody justifying fair use claims in court - especially now that President Obama seems bent on padding our Department of Justice with ex-RIAA lawyers (Why, Barack? Instead of screwing us over with weak ass media formats and software, they stuck it to the media companies, knowing full well it would come to this, and they still did it anyway. Then again, I don't need expensive (or even non-free ) software to rip DVDs, nor am I going to stop backing up my movies/music/games just because the DMCA or anything/one else says I should. A VHS can be copied to a VHS and a DVD can be copied to a DVD, but not a VHS to a DVD. It will be interesting to see how this will play out since the law does not protect copying the copyrighted motion pictures to a different media (the hard drive in this case).

Ben

Comments on RealDVD ripping software heads to court, fair use advocates on pins and needles

Ben, there are no laws that state you must only backup within the medium of the product you purchased. Everything we purchase should be able to back up to any media. If I bought a bluray of a movie, I can make a copy of dvd version to play in a car, I can put it on a portable device. Why should we pay 3 times for the same thing. And if I bought a DVD...why can't I copy it to bluray. It's not like the resolution will improve or anything. The BIG media are claiming they are just renting you the license to play the movie/music on the specific device and no others. Even if you rip a movie to watch on your iPod while in the limbo ride to work they, the BIG media, believes this is not a privilege granted to up under your license to view the DVD only on a DVD play (and attached TV). Hell if you read the fine print there are some that indicate maximum viewing audience.
I am sure if they could they would want a small fee for every time you watched the DVD, fast forwarded/paused/etc any part of the movie.
My goals of copying the DVD is:
- just to get ride of all the crap at the start of the DVD that you typically can not fast forward through.
- My kids have actually licked the DVDs and chewed on them. I need back-ups!
- I like to take movies on Vacation an older laptop with 25 burnt movies makes it a lot easier and less risk of losing a DVD here and there. Like other users here, if I want to rip a copy to use on my iphone I should be able to do it, or if I want to make a DVD that I can entrust to my children without fear of them destroying the damn thing then I should be able to do that too. This is a huge money grab that will ultimately, in the long run, amount to nothing as legal or not we will see programs and machines that easily allow non-techies to accomplish this same end. Yes, piracy is a problem, but I'm of the opinion that one of the root causes of piracy is the anti-competitive, ant-consumer behavior of the recording industry and their lobbying arms. They fought digital downloading tooth and nail while they could have been making billions, and I have no doubt that they'll somehow manage a way to FUBAR something that should be easy.

Ryan LN

Comments on RealDVD ripping software heads to court, fair use advocates on pins and needles

DVDfab + Boxee = AWESOMENESS!!

bethel03

Comments on RealDVD ripping software heads to court, fair use advocates on pins and needles

AnyDVD + MyMovies + 1.5 TB hdd = nice movie collection with no need to switch out discs

Michael

Comments on RealDVD ripping software heads to court, fair use advocates on pins and needles

All this "should" stuff is silly.
