PXP-900 handheld ditches the UMD drive, and the PSP

A new PSP may well be on the horizon, but it looks like the knock-off business is still going strong with the classic model, and it's kicked out one of its most faithful / blatant homages to date with this new so-called PXP-900. While it doesn't do anything crazy like actually play PSP games, you can apparently make use of the included emulator to play NES, GameBoy, SNES, and Genesis games -- even including those rare few 32X games, from the sound of it. Otherwise, you can expect the usual basic PMP functionality, along with a 2GB of internal memory, an SD card slot for expansion, a TV out port, an FM tuner, and your choice of four different colors -- all for the low, low price of $89.99.

nice try but i'm sure it wouldn't be giving the same experience of a PSP
Maybe some of the games would be more 'fun' without the top-notch graphics?
profound and astute...
really, quite a brilliant hypothesis.
Wow. Just... the worst, lamest comment of the month.
When you tried KIRF Fruity Pebbles that were made of actual pebbles and rocks, were you also this diplomatic?
Perfect gift for that illiterate kid int he family. He'll never figure out that it isn't a PSP.
the big screen is cool, but i kinda like that gba-micro lookin thing that was on here like 2 weeks ago, much better file type support, and it's like 10 bucks cheaper
It's so bad it didn't even deserve the KIRF tag
Actually, it will probably kick PSP's butt as a video player. Cough.. xvid...cough.
YESS
I'd say the same. Perfect gift to buy Sony executives as a Christmas gift + Transformers on HDDVD off course.
too bad they couldn't add a second analog stick thingy to this kirf
and yeah where's the Kirf addition to the title?
You intend to play SNES games with a second analog stick?
you dual analoggers shouldn't even try portable gaming because you clearly can't handle it
The only reason I can think of my neeeding a second analouge stick in recent memory is when I got Katamari Damacy.
I never play console FPSs.
I had a PSP and all I wanted to play were First Person Shooters. Somehow that thing screams portable FPS machine to me. There are a lot of games that would take advantage of dual analog sticks, racegames, fps, third person shooters, special moves for sportsgames etc etc.
@M.
THIS ISN'T A PSP.
I love the camera's attempt to appear to be a UMD drive, some awful engineer somewhere is really pleased with themselves. Unlike anybody who buys this.
why not just get the psp for a few dollars more and slap some custom firmware on there?
oh neos
For $20 more you could just get a used PSP.
can a real PSP emulate all of those old school games? This has a lot of interest to me.
answer = VERY YES
Yeah, a PSP can emulate up to PS1(or PSX) games....though, Sony doesn't like custom firmwares on their systems, so they patch the new PSPs so you can't mod them with old firmware...you can normally only "slap" custom firmwares onto old PSPs.
Use google to search for this kind of info.
(I plan to get one for this reason soon after the PSP2 comes out)
Actually I have a tool to mod any PSP. Works like a charm, I got it off ebay.
A few other devices that you might want to look into. These are/will be nice because they are open (i.e. you don't have to hack into them to do what you want).
Pandora (Full blown linux computer the size of a DS - not yet released)
GP2X Wiz (Ultra portable, Gameboy micro sized - not yet released)
GP2X (Underpowered compared to PSP but actually available - out of production but can be found used)
The article headline was an epic win.
I was thinking the same thing. I just ordered a dingoo and have been following the dev scene for it. From its capabilities its quite possible it has the exact same hardware. The only difference I can see is that first it has half the build in flash space. Second it also lists its video playback at only 320x240 res's and that you have to convert the videos first. The dingoo you dont have to do this and it supports most encodings out of the box as long as they arent HD resolutions or use AC3
I wonder, what kind of hardware is in it? I´d bet it´s like the Gemei 760+ or the Dingoo A320 and will also play the software available for those handhelds. The Emulators are the same the Dingoo comes with, except CPS1/2 and GBA, and there are already a few other emulators ported for Dingoo, like NeoGeo and Sega Master System.
So if you´re into Emulators, the Dingoo may be the better choice, or maybe the Pandora too, if it´ll ever arrive.
tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooold
I bet it's got a better screen than the ghosting piece-of-crap screen on my PSP.
I bet it's got a better screen than the one on my Game Gear.
That picture got me excited that their was news about a new PSP. Not this pxp crap.
I think I would rather have this over the PSP. This looks like a fun portable emulation station.
Look at that HD screen.
Wow! Piece of junk considering the PSP can run emulation.
What is sad is that this is better than the PSP.
What is sad is you think that's actually true.
Whats sad is it's Actually True!
I could sell that for at least $150
2GB memory should be enough to download every snes nes genesis game ever to come out why would you need an sd card slot
But but... what about my new iphone? Too many choices :(
rob @ www.tinman.ie
Shouldn't this be under Keepin' It Real Fake?
if it were able to play PC engine games alongside all off those other emulators I would've bought this in a heartbeat.
Actually, emulators and all the other stuff is what I use my PSP for anyway.

I suppose if all you want to do is use the emulator this is fine, but for a PMP this is a poor choice, IMO. Max capacity for SD at 4GB? Please. Non removable battery (and no battery life numbers)? Ugh. 3.5" 320x240 16:9 screen? Might be passable, but the PSP's screen is bigger 4.3" and higher res (480x272, about 1.7x as many pixels). And from the looks of it, the only video format supported is what I assume to be Xvid/Divx AVI (which is what MP4 players support when they say MP4). All those other formats look like they need to be converted to AVI. And 25 fps is o.k. for PAL users, but I'm in the U.S. so I'd prefer 30 fps.
And what's with those randomly placed shiny stickers on the back?
Only if the PAL users can get the extra resolution that were used too! :P
