Seems like a possible price, the iPod touch is only $229 new, so that price would seem more than reasonable (although truth be told, R&D would bring it up to $999-1299 for the first iteration). Firstly, since the OS installation process does no check for a previous version of OS X, it's not the same sort of upgrade as Windows. Secondly, as those who have built a Hackintosh will testify, you don't need to have bought a Mac in order to install OS X and therefore they didn't already buy a license. One of the nice things about OS X is that there is only really one version of it (not counting the Server version) and it doesn't mess about with the likes of Activation or serial numbers. It came with my MacBook though as I bought it right after 10.5 came out, so it came with 10.4 preinstalled and they threw in an upgrade DVD in there.

Anyways, people who build a hackintosh don't buy MacOS, since you won't be able to install it straight from the original disk anyways, you download a hacked version from torrents or wherever. Buying MacOS doesn't give them the license to install it on their hackintosh anyways, so there's no point of buying it from a legal point of view. So the only way to legally get MacOS is as an upgrade for your Mac.

Also, Apple can afford to sell MacOS cheap because it can only be used on Apple computers (hacked versions of the OS for Hackintoshes don't count, it's the same as pirated versions of Windows), which are overpriced, so Apple already has your money. MS doesn't sell the computers, they only sell the software, and they only get money for the software.

vb

Comments on

Cheaper meaning what? You have plenty of lemmings (buyers) lining up to get the latest and greatest from Apple. They may be taking a PR hit with the recent commercials but I doubt it does anything to their bottom line. Apple buyers will continue to pay outrageous prices. They may not like it but they are dedicated and devoted to the cause. Listening to many commenters on this blog, they would pay amount for an Apple product. They would go without before using Windows (and they certainly won't migrate to Linux).

bjsguess

Comments on

"I'll buy anything as long as it's shiny and made by Apple"

I seriously wouldn't doubt that Apple could sell the Macbook Wheel to a few users of this site...

somewonone

Comments on

Well.. you know Mac users very very badly..
- Many Mac users use Windows for some operations
- Many Mac proffesionals use windows and Linux
- This year especially People are not willing to pay any extra money
- You can always get a Xakinstosh without apple..

Dking

Comments on

I know I would!

Guy

Comments on

"- This year especially People are not willing to pay any extra money"
Wrong.
The most people who buy Macs have more than enough money and aren't affected as much right now.
