iri5 releases the ghost from the cassette machine
Over the last few months, artist iri5 has been compiling a collection of work on Flickr under the heading, "Ghost in the Machine." The pieces start with old cassette tapes and end in awesome. To quote the artist:

The idea comes from a philosopher's (Ryle) description of how your spirit lives in your body. I imagine we are all, like cassettes, thoughts wrapped up in awkward packaging.Indeed. And they don't come much more awkwardly packaged than The Cure's Robert Smith immortalized above. Check out a close-up of his tussled chromium-dioxide hair after the break and be sure to hit the read link for iri5's full collection. The Jimi Hendrix experience alone is worth it.

That's pretty cool. She must have some pretty steady hands to be able to do this. At first, it kind of looks like that the tape is actually just black marker on white paper and then a big pile of tape for the frizzy hair. Without the tape leading back in to the cassette, it might be harder to believe.
I wonder if she's one of those people that sets up those amazing dominoe scenes that you see in movies. You know, where the dominoes make a picture of something awesome and then it gets knocked over because some clumsy person just can't help but trip over it?
Her website is here - http://www.iri5.com/ check out he Salavdor Dali ones they are fantastic - she doesn't just do cassettes....
Run out of Apple news?

The bob dylan blew my mind. She's a damn good artist.
It looks more like that homosexual looking singer from The Cure. I can't stand The Cure.
@Liqwid Go update your music likes and dislikes on your Myspace profile. And what does homosexual look like anyway?
Liquid, the Bob Dylan can be found on flikr. go find it and then go to the record store and invest in some great music, then go home and burn all of your kelly clarkson cds.
Mince!
The idea clearly comes from "The Mighty Boosh" Betamax Bandit. A bandit that has been terrorising a small desert town. An obsolete format, he is seeking revenge, killing all the men and having his way with the women. He is allergic to peanut butter.
neat concept.
"The idea comes from a philosopher's (Ryle) description of how your spirit lives in your body."
...That is...regrettably stupid.
Google 'ghost in the machine ryle' > first hit, Wikipedia for 'ghost in the machine' > First line: "The "ghost in the machine" is British philosopher Gilbert Ryle's derogatory description of René Descartes' mind-body dualism." Ryle's whole shtick is denying that there is such a 'ghost'.
I wish more artists tended to feel some kind of...intellectual responsibility? He could at least just say "I thought I would make some absolutely bitchin' portraits of people out of cassette tapes" and not look like an ass.
Part of being an artist means changing your beliefs, fundamentally and frequently, and then scoffing angrily at people who call you on it. Because they just don't /get/ it. Didn't you know?
Robert Smith!!!!
the cure sucks.
And nobody seems to think maybe they got the name idea from "Ghost in the Shell" and all that the name implies?
Yeah... go snag that series on Netflix..
totally mighty boosh!
I love 'The Mighty Boosh!" and my favourite character is "OLD GREGG". The show is so psychedelic, warped and funny very good for those lazy days in front of the television!
I have some Mighty Boosh inspired Tee's!

Heard of ghosts needing a medium to walk the earth. Looks like this time they've chosen to use the digital (or should i say, Magnetic) medium!!
