Watching There Will Be Blood was annoying during the quiet scenes when I would faintly hear a little 'wirrrrr' every now and then as the PS3 cooled itself off. It also has no real remote support yet.. Also the built-in DTS-HD decoding is not all that great if you've got a nice receiver that can do it instead. Buying a separate player that lets your receiver do the decoding provides a MUCH nicer sound experience.

The PS3 was a nice intro Blu-Ray player, but it's showing its age now compared to these newer dedicated ones.

Pip

Comments on Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray player casually arrives at Best Buy

I do agree that the fan notice can be a slight distraction during quiet scenes, I don't find it to be too big of a deal, although everyone is allowed their own opinion. (I LOVE AMERICA) The ONLY difference between the player decoding the audio (PS3 method) and the receiver decoding the audio (some players, also where the little lights on your receiver light up) is WHERE the decoding occurs. The sound IS identical, I have first hand experience as I work at a high-end audio store with B&W 802d's ($14k/pair). There is no difference.

Kyle

Comments on Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray player casually arrives at Best Buy

@Kyle

There is a difference. Well, technically you are right, on paper there shouldn't be difference between LPCM streams. However the key here is decoding itself. Sony PS3 is using software decoding while AVRs like Denon and others use much better quality hardware chips. There's a reason why you buy a high end reciever. It has better decoding chips that produce nicer quality. Once it is in LPCM it should theoretically sound the same as the original but what is not included in this fact is the way how that audio is decoded.

I can clearly hear a difference coming from my Blu-ray standalone that sends bitstream to my Denon receiver for decoding and PS3. The sound is fuller and more detailed. I can notice it and it's definitely not a placebo, cause other people hear it too at blind test.

Secondly, PS3s video processing is really not top notch. It's good enough to say it's a good Blu-ray player but not great. Take newer Samsung or LG players and the picture is sharper, less noise etc.

PS3s Blu-ray capability is just like DVD was on PS2. It's ok for many but it's definitely not great as there are better players out there now.

Bozster

Comments on Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray player casually arrives at Best Buy

I just picked up the previous model, the 350, for $149 (combining a one-day Dell promotion and a Dell gift card). TOTALLY worth the money. I held off until now, but I feel that the speed and picture quality of the Sony is top notch - I'm glad I took the plunge.

TK

TK101

Comments on Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray player casually arrives at Best Buy

sweet, but a little underwhelming on the design looks....

HDpurist

Comments on Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray player casually arrives at Best Buy

I am not sure if I want to get one of these Sony BDp-S360 players, I saw a sony bdp s360 review here, but I still can't make up my mind.
