The netbook fad should last about another six months, tops (almost as long as a netbook will before it starts to fall apart piece by piece). So the purchaser of the contract will be stuck with an underpowered, low-valued and outdated device for the remaining 18 months. Who's the contract wonderful for? The carriers, of course. The carriers are just playing netbook users for suckers. Two-year contracts are just too long. One-year contracts should be tops for netbook users.

iphonerulez

Comments on Verizon's HP Mini 1000 due to launch May 17th?

Verizon might remove wifi from the netbook, in keeping with tradition.

Yea seriously why cant they come out with a decent smartphone already? sonofabitch!
Stop fckin around with this netbook BS!

soobin27

Comments on Verizon's HP Mini 1000 due to launch May 17th?

I hate the cell carriers expensive ass business-targeted 3G data fees as much as the next guy, but it is just plain stupid to suggest WiFi is a decent alternative, unless you never leave home or the coffee shop. I mean after the 2 years, you will have a computer that is probably full of viruses and spyware that the carrier doesn't warrant in their crappy ass "Protection Plan". You'll have ended up paying up the ass for a crappy netbook so that you could use "America's Most Reliable Network" with mediocre 3G speeds and 3G service not available everywhere. If you were to pay $299 for the netbook, $35 activation fee, 24 months of Protection Plan at $6.99, and 24 months of data access, the netbook would cost you $1941 and some change. And, BTW, a similarly configured Mini through HP's website without the broadband modem will set you back $439. Then you could go and get the broadband card from your favorite cell company and use it on it for a lot less in the long run than this junk.

Setnev

Comments on Verizon's HP Mini 1000 due to launch May 17th?

Too much netbooks! :-P

alex

Comments on Verizon's HP Mini 1000 due to launch May 17th?

*sniff sniff* smells like hidden fees

Matt

Comments on Verizon's HP Mini 1000 due to launch May 17th?

$299 for the device and a 2 year data contract? $200 off the standard MSRP?

You just described Apple's iPhone price on AT&T's required 2 year data plan. AT&T, in theory, is paying the same price to Apple as you pay when you buy one at MSRP at their store (replacement cost), so $599 like you said you paid. I agree with the comments about the built in connectiity being worthless. At Best Buy Mobile, they had a deal for the AT& T data where they gave you the Acer Aspire One and the USB data connector for $99 when you signed up for the data plan. I got them to price match the Radio Shack price, which they did. So in essence, I got the computer for $49 and the USB data connector for free (which you can get almost anywhere with a new agreement). So if the computer goes belly-up, I still have the connector to use on another computer if need be. Not a bad deal, I think anyway.

Bill

Comments on Verizon's HP Mini 1000 due to launch May 17th?

when are they ever one time?

freegift

Comments on Verizon's HP Mini 1000 due to launch May 17th?

when are they ever on time?

freegift

Comments on Verizon's HP Mini 1000 due to launch May 17th?

I’m using mine (1030NR) right now while enjoying a little vaca in Ft Lauderdale. Can’t beat it’s combination of portability and full XP usefulness. Bought it at Best Buy, no cell carrier involved. Beats the hell out of using a smartphone. When I don’t have a wi-fi signal I tether it to my 3g phone and the speed difference is hardly noticeable. I can even use Skype or AIM for video calls when tethered. ATT wanted me to pay $20 more per month for unlimited data when I wanted to ugrade to a PDA phone. Since I already have unlimited data, I told them to keep their PDA. If I want one bad enough, I’ll buy an unlocked phone. Adding up the extra cost over a new, two year contract is absurd. I don’t use enough data to justify it. The Skyping was just for giggles and I probably won’t use it again and I almost never need to tether. $20 more per month just to check my e-mail on the road? This is a very handy little netbook and the key board is almost full size. I did expect a faster boot time from a flash drive…oh well.

Ric Kaysen

Comments on Verizon's HP Mini 1000 due to launch May 17th?

It's a netbook, if you don't like it don't buy it. This is a great option for people who have to travel around the country, with roaming agreements and VZW coverage you'll be able to get on the internet just about anywhere and not worry about whether wifi is there or not. I don't know where you people live who get wifi everywhere they go, but that's just not reality where I've travelled. Go through New Mexico and tell me if you get a wifi spot that isn't security enabled. Tethering is much slower than a pc card, some people claim to have up to 3mbps on their tether setup, I find that to be ridiculous and over exagerrated.

It's expensive, but if you want to be mobile and have a computer with internet, this is a great option. Not the best... but great.

groovieknave
