The reason for the high cost of audiophile equipment is that the market is so tiny. With so few buying, the manufacturers (most of the "manufacturers" being a dude in China that sells stuff on Ebay) can't buy in bulk for cheap, so the smallest part costs a ridiculous amount of money. When you combine that with the insane markup they charge (because they can. They have no competition after all) you get a wallet destroying pricetag.

I recently bought a "mid-level" headphone amp (Darkvoice *insert a whole lot of numbers here*) off of ebay for 200-300 dollars. For some of the more insane people on Head-Fi, a PMP for 700 dollars is nothing as long as it beats the modified Ipods that a lot of them use on the go. This product will have legs if the sound quality turns out to be worth it to that very select group (of which I am not a part. My "Audiophile rig" consists of a decent (yet relatively cheap) DAC feeding the aforementioned Darkvoice headphone amp). If it doesn't, it will quickly die.

BananaBoat

Comments on HifiMAN HM-801 PMP promises to make audiophiles happy, wallets hurt

frankly somewhat ridiculous. 700 bucks for something that doest play video AND has no storage of its own? and if you buy this, your gonna need a massive ammount of storage, because face it no self respecting audiophile is gonna have audio in a lossy format...

epic fail on company's part for thinking this could sell at all.

the_misfit

Comments on HifiMAN HM-801 PMP promises to make audiophiles happy, wallets hurt

I'm drooling. That's awesome. As an unapologetic audiophile, I've been disappointed by the sound quality of my Zune and the IPODs. There is certainly room for improvement, and only priced at cost of a good pair of RCA interconnects, or average quality speaker cables. It is great to see some innovation / high-end developing. The latest Zunes and Ipod classic / nano are underwhelming, and the Ipod touch has lousy sound, not enough storage for lossless music, and is to much focus on non-music activities.

Frunk

Comments on HifiMAN HM-801 PMP promises to make audiophiles happy, wallets hurt

Frunk if you are such an Audiopile why haven't you tried a Cowon yet?
