While a cpu can be faster by having a higher clock speed, that does not mean that it is able to process more information at once as a processor with a lower clock speed. A perfect example is how the 4ghz pentium 4's are much slower than it's 2gz core 2 cousin. RAM and fsb also play a large role in processor speed. So while a processor may be faster in terms of clock speed, it can be slower in terms of actual real world use. Also, this is a laptop, meaning it runs on a battery, slower clock speeds in combination with more energy efficient designs result in longer battery life and smaller laptops.

Trevor

Comments on iUnika Gyy netbook weighs 1.5 pounds, will cost $176

It does have a Windows key in the second picture.

superhobo

Comments on iUnika Gyy netbook weighs 1.5 pounds, will cost $176

i noticed that...

i guess its force of habit by manufacturors

Oli D

Comments on iUnika Gyy netbook weighs 1.5 pounds, will cost $176

This is because of the "Microsoft Windows Logo Key Logo License Agreement for Keyboard Manufacturers"

Microsoft is currently publishing new guidelines for a new Windows Logo key that incorporates the Windows logo recessed in a lowered circle with a contrast ratio of at least 3:1 with respect to background that the key is applied to. ^Wiki

Seems I will have to put up with a non-matching useless-key from now on.

kingu

Comments on iUnika Gyy netbook weighs 1.5 pounds, will cost $176

Hilarious!
But you'll never see this in the cloudy Norwegian market...but if they manage to make a decent screen and keyboard, well then they got me :P

Renal

Comments on iUnika Gyy netbook weighs 1.5 pounds, will cost $176

The US 104-key layout doesn't feature a ""-key, so that decency out the window.

kingu

Comments on iUnika Gyy netbook weighs 1.5 pounds, will cost $176

Figures that didnt work, left of the Z-button is what i meant.

kingu

Comments on iUnika Gyy netbook weighs 1.5 pounds, will cost $176

All you guys seem to forget that we survived for years on a 33Mhz machines (or less). It's really simple.

If you want to run Windows or any app that runs on Windows, 400MHz MIPS is *useless*.
If you want to run MacOS X or any app that runs on MacOS X, 400MHz MIPS is *useless*.
If you want to run Linux and you don't need to run anything that requires serious horsepower (and are comfortable compiling your own distro and apps, since MIPS distros are pretty rare these days), 400MHz MIPS is fine.
If you want to run whatever it comes with in the box, find all the apps you need there, 400MHz MIPS is fine.

But let's get over this: netbooks are not just "PDAs with keyboards". They weren't from the very start. A 1.6GHz Atom may not be able to run killer games, but it runs almost all mainstream home and office productivity software. It runs MacOS just fine. To argue that 'crap is ok because all I need it crap' is an inane argument because it implies that NO ONE needs more than that to what they want.

The price difference between this device and even a Dell Mini 10 is just $125. It's even less if you go for one of the low end Acers or Asuses. If you really feel that throwing away all that capability just to save less than 1/2 the price of an already insanely cheap device is good economics - well, hey - buy it and call me back in a few weeks when it's sitting on a shelf being useless.

Seriously, I think the Linux crowd honestly believes that by making a toaster into a laptop they'll really impress someone. True, this would suck for watching movies, and possibly even web browsing, but on the other hand, it's a perfect remote sensing collector. Especially, the solar version, but even plugged into a generator somewhere every few hours. Collect data and stream it wherever on cell or other networks. This is similar to connecting up a PDA to collect data, but with the better connectivity that comes with the notebook form factor. USB, microphone, serial(?), could let you stash this thing away and act as a sensor platform enabling some pretty cool concepts. On a similar vein, what a great, low-power robot platform. What do you need, but to collect data, make calculations, and feed back to the motors. This device would be great for that. Stop thinking of netbooks as small notebooks. Some are (Eee, and Aspire), but they aren't all the same. The premium for a small computer a few years ago was ridiculous. Think outside the box!

Arian

Comments on iUnika Gyy netbook weighs 1.5 pounds, will cost $176

@Jeff
I agree, 400 MHz mips is a bit light for most applications, even web surfing would be limit on that thing.
