The way the sensor is read-off is in columns.  In order to speed up the processing, it reads off narrower columns...   in other words, the shorter the column the faster it can be read. You can also change White Balance and save stills from video, which are quite useful.  Quality-wise, pictures can't hold a candle to my 3-yr-old (!!)
