Unfortunately, I doubt that the Pre will have as much of an impact as the iPhone. Apple just has a knack for whipping up fanatic loyalty in their customers; something that I haven't seen from Palm. But we'll see! The iPhone was positioned by Apple from the start as an excellent smart phone, but also a fun/social phone, the media abilities were really emphasised as well as the iTunes integration.

The Pre seems to be positioned more as a business phone, the ads so far have really been more about it's calendaring features etc and there's been almost nothing about it's media capabilities.

I just finished my freshman year at college, and I can tell you that this is why teens/tweens buy these phones. If the cool guy at school has one, then they need one. QWERTY should come as no surprise to anyone because teens like to text.
