This is like what Microsoft did with Internet Explorer and WMP in the '90s.

However, Intel takes Microsoft's abuses one step further. By giving away IE with Windows, it was impossible for Netscape to charge money for its browser, and most people just didn't have a need for a second browser. Now, imagine if Microsoft had built IE into Windows, and then charged the customers who intended to run Netscape nearly double for their copies Windows.

That is what Intel is doing here. It's not that they're giving partners incentives to use their chipsets, which would be fine. Intel is selling Atom+Chipset for far less than just Atom. nVidia doesn't make a CPU, they make chipsets (with fantastic integrated GPUs). So, nVidia's platform still requires the CPU, which they can't purchase from Intel for a fair amount of money. If nVidia's chipset is only $5 it would still cost them $50 to sell the Atom+nVidia chipset package to OEMs, which is more than twice as much as the OEM could purchase an Atom+Intel chipset package.

This is flagrant anti-competitive behavior. It makes it completely impossible for anyone to offer an Atom+chipset platform anywhere near the prices Intel offers them at because they charge competitors almost twice as much for the CPU as Intel charges for the whole CPU/chipset combo. I knew Intel was predatory and anti-competitive but this is far too flagrant to ignore. Guess I won't recommend another netbook or notebook to anyone unless it has a non-Intel chipset and/or CPU until they change this ridiculous policy.

Examancer

Comments on

However, it would be possible for manufacturers to buy Intel's Atom/chipset bundle in addition to nVidia's chipset and simply throw away or reuse the Intel chipset.
