Not much on how it works:

http://www.puredepth.com/sub_tech_what.html

It looks to me they are using visual cues that give the brain hints about depth, much like painters and sketchers have known for centuries, e.g., a more distant object could be out of focus, or darker, add in a screen that is actually an inch further away, and you can get some nice effects.

You'll have 3d alright, but just two depths; near and far, but combined with "artisan illusions" it could look pretty good. Still, this isn't "true" 3d. Unless they can provide each eyeball a different angular view of the same subject (stereoscopic information), this isn't really the 3D I was hoping for.

There is another experimental LCD whose surface is like a washboard. So that the left and right eye see the left slanted surface and the right slanted surface respectively. And since you can draw a different image on each slant, you can get stereo information. The problem is, all eyes aren't spaced out equally, and you have to be at the proper viewing distance.

There's also dome shaped monitors that give true 3d displays, but they aren't very compact.

It would be nice to have an LCD monitor that can mimic holographic material.

What could be within technological reach today, would be LCD goggles, where each screen is shaped like a dome, and encompasses not only your eyes frontal field of vision, but the periphery as well. This may be your best bet in experiencing "true" 3d.

Ah the future...

Toy Yoda

Comments on PureDepth ramps up production of "Multi-Layer" 3D displays

You know, I had this idea when I was a kid, back in the days of the original Game Boy.
