But it's not perfect.

(1) Everyone seems to be getting their panties wet about universal search, but "universal" seems to be a complete misnomer. Firstly, one cannot search e.g. memos, tasks etc from the standard universal search dialogue: one needs to be in the app. Secondly, one can't search for composite terms (e.g. "Mike cisco" to get all the Mikes who work for Cisco (example in the vid)).

(2) Synergy is a fantastic idea, but it's a little disappointing at the moment and needs some refinement. It currently syncs with Gmail's "all contacts" (≠ "my contacts"), which means EVERYONE you've ever emailed in Gmail. Similarly (but somewhat less objectionably) it syncs with all one's Facebook friends, and there seems to be no way to delete entries: next time one syncs they will be replaced (or deleted from GMail entirely). Palm needs to get some filtering on this - I know there may be a lot to be said for having a huge searchable book of contacts, but combined with the limitation on searching identified above, this doesn't seem to be a great solution. Plus you may end up with a fugly address book 90% full of people you will never call.

(3) Two taps to get to the apps seems unnecessary.

(4) It's not as "synced" as it could be; e.g. task dates don't link with the calendar; there's not even an option for it.

There were a few other limitations noted in the vids that have slipped my mind. To be clear, none of these points are a deliberate comparison to the iPhone; e.g. iPhone doesn't even have tasks implementation. I just want to see Palm sort out these little foibles (and of course, they may do so by release, although it seems unlikely).

Furthermore, can we please get rid of all this "Apple did multi-touch first", "Palm invented universal search and Apple copied it" etc. Aside from the fact that we don't know whether each company was working on the tech before their competitor released their product (I'd find it hard to believe that Spotlight wasn't in the works before the Pre), who came first simply doesn't matter. The important issue is whose implementation of each of these features is best NOW.

Rant aside, this thing looks fantastic. Particularly excited about the gestures. Hope they get it to the UK mighty fast, and here's to some decent head-on iPhone competition. Sorry for the long post, innit.

cbw87

Comments on More Palm Pre emulator videos emerge: universal search, calendar, and email (oh my)

@vitriolix: Windows Mobile has something neat called Voice Command if you're interested in that stuff.

Quikboy

Comments on More Palm Pre emulator videos emerge: universal search, calendar, and email (oh my)

damn, you j.j. abrams. 1st star trek now engadget !

asinine

Comments on More Palm Pre emulator videos emerge: universal search, calendar, and email (oh my)

You can bet that if those small features are lacking that they'll be implemented almost immediately after launch.
