If it's the first, then HP definitely deserves the blame, but everything seems to point towards the latter. First the LCD started flickering (due to a bad connection with the power cord), then the computer started running on batteries more and more until the power cord finally crapped out. Eventually it was only charging half the time, and when I took it to the repair shop, they said it was a motherboard problem and they couldn't fix it.
