Nike+iPod gets repurposed as wireless key fob

Got a Nike+iPod kit laying around but not doing much exercising with it? Then you might want to follow the lead of SparkFun's Nate, who took the device and turned it into a decidedly non-exercise minded wireless key fob -- or iFob, as Nate has dubbed it. That, as you might expect, isn't exactly a completely straightforward process, and also involves putting an Arduino Pro Mini into the mix, not to mention a bit of minor surgery to both your car and your car's original key fob. If that doesn't scare you off, however, you can find the complete instructions and plenty of helpful pics at the link below, although you're on your own if you want to build something that actually starts your car.

Great idea!
Completely not worth the trouble lol
fresh off the boat
Who calls them key fobs?
Only a real FOBbish n00b would call it a fob.
WOW, great idea, but no way in hell for me. My alarm locks me out enough as it is, let alone ripping the chip out of my master key to start the car once I do get in. Pretty cool idea though!
Hopefullly you'll go away if we ignore you...DOH. oops...meant to do just that.
This mod is utterly stupid like the posters here on engadget...
This is loke all those Honda Tuner losers that take a $3000 car and inject $50,000 and 10,000 man hours when they could have just went out and bought a real sports car...
@ James. why are you taking the time to read and comment on a blog you do not support?
Awesome work, keeping the true meaning of modding alive! There doesn't have to be a reason, it doesn't even have to make life easier, just do it because you CAN!
James:
Yeah, like all those people who upgrade their PC and spend hundreds of dollars on video cards when they could have just bought an HP Blackbird in the first place... or all those people that buy a $100K house and spend $150K upgrading it to their likes and tastes when they could have just bought a real $250K house in the first place....
People mod their cars because its a low initial cost, and then I can spend $1000 here, $500 there and have FUN installing it myself. Its a HOBBY. Deal with it.
All great except that Nike+ transmits a static number so "all" someone has to do is capture and replay and boom they are in your car.
Fine for cheap car where people would just put a brick through the window, less good for a bugatti veyron which people might try harder to steal...
p.s. yes I belive it is like 24 where they would use a satellite to x-ray the Nike+, analyse the circuit and determine the code then wirelessly reconfigure Jacks phone to output the code all in about 2 mins!
Wow, Great article Engadget! You must have read the same article as i did yesterday on Gizmodo...you know, the one by Andi Wang at 6:40pm on 5/26/09, 22 hours before you posted yours. Yeah that one. You even got the exact same photo. Good stuff! A++++
So what ?? I read this on hackaday.com on may 22nd!!
Guess what ...
The same picture! and I'm sure some one else read it before me too ...
Commenting that its kind of the same things as saying FIRST!!! when you haven't even read the article... press ctrl+backspace a couple of times and go cry to gizmodo ...
Yea well I read it on the SparkFun homepage on the 20th. I win. Now grow up..
It was also on hack a day about a week ago
I could just see if news was like this:
"What do you mean North Korea detonated a nuclear bomb?!? I've been watching CNN all day!"
"Yeah, apparently Fox News broke the story first, so no one else could report it."
I'm with Mitch, though. It was (and still is) right up front on SparkFun's homepage. I saw it cause I needed to order some geeky goodies.
Cool.
My previous Lexus came with such a device. It was awesome being able to cool the car, in the scorching Miami sun/heat before getting in to the car.
I don't know why Lexus stopped offering them...
