Video: Sony's PSP Go leaks out before E3, is obviously a go
Look up there, folks. That's the future of Sony's hopes and dreams in the handheld gaming sector. With just hours to go before the company's official E3 2009 press event, it looks like the pieces are all coming together. First a UMD-less game release, then a highly credible mole giving the PSP Go a name, and now -- live action shots. The images here were sourced from an obviously slipped June 2009 Qore video, and aside from giving us a look at the slider-based system (which, let's be honest, looks a ton like the questionably successful mylo), we're also told that it'll tout 16GB of internal memory, built-in Bluetooth and an undisclosed memory slot. If all goes well, it'll ship this Fall for a price to be determined, and it's actually not slated to replace the PSP-3000, as both of 'em will attempt to live on store shelves harmoniously... at least for awhile. Oh, and don't worry -- we'll be on hand in LA to bring you all the impressions we can muster early next week.

Update: Video is now after the break! Thanks adizzy615!
Update 2: Official press shots have emerged. [Via Engadget Spanish]
Update 3: A few more official specifications are flowing from the full Qore video (pardon the sync issues). Here's the dirt:

Update 2: Official press shots have emerged. [Via Engadget Spanish]
Update 3: A few more official specifications are flowing from the full Qore video (pardon the sync issues). Here's the dirt:
- 3.8-inch display (resolution is undisclosed)
- 43 percent lighter than the PSP-3000
- 16GB of Flash storage
- Bluetooth built-in; supports handset tethering and BT headsets
- No UMD drive
- Memory Stick Micro slot
- New Gran Turismo, Little Big Planet and new Metal Gear Solid (!) on the way
- Full PlayStation Network support (movie and TV rentals / purchases)
- Integration with PlayStation 3 (works the same as the PSP-3000 does)
- Sony views each of its products as "10-year lifecycle products," so the PSP "needs to live on."

Awww, no dual analog sticks!
And no Sexy.
Is it me or that thing looks..uhm...hideous? Doesn't look like a Sony product, IMO
I agree blitz...this thing is way too ugly to be a Sony product.
I call shenanigans.
Fake and ugly for sony standards
It does look similar to the Mylo 2...
Not a good thing mind
Actually it looks a lot like a Sony product... just a shame they picked an ugly on to fashion it after:

Why would it have dual analog sticks? It's meant to exist alongside the current PSP but with a focus on downloading games as opposed to optical media, they're not going to cannablize sales of existing PSP games by changing the hardware.
It's an in between device, to focus consumers on the Playstation Store, you'll notice quite an obvious trend that we're moving towards these unified marketplaces from the large electronic companies.
It's quite a good move on Sony's part, using the existing PSP hardware and games, but it remains to be seen whether it'll be a success.
Awesome!! Controls DO seem really low though...
What, no tag for Veronica Belmont...? O.o
Dual analog sticks wouldn't make new games incompatible with old systems, they would just have to have two control setups programmed into them to make them playable on both systems.
You know, the same way as almost every single original Playstation game was after the first Dual Shock came out? Except that they had to be programmed for two sticks versus zero.
I guess existing owners might be pissed that there's no upgrade path to be able to get the second stick (since this thing can't play their existing game library) but those are the breaks in the world of portable electronics.
@chefgon_ign
Good points. I still see this as more of an inbetween device, one to focus their efforts on the growing Playstation Store. I could easily see a PSP of upgraded hardware in 2011 when the Playstation Store has matured a bit and they can offer a huge back catalog of games along with newer titles for an upgraded PSP.
@chefgon_ign: "Them's the breaks" is an arrogant approach for a company in the best of times, but when your system is already languishing behind the competition, it would be downright stupid.
Buying a $30 controller (or whatever the DS cost back then) is one thing, upgrading an entire system is something altogether. Not adding a second analog stick was absolutely the right thing to do for what is a PSP facelift, not a PSP sequel.
Here, watch this vid:
http://ps3hype.nl/nieuws/3324-exclusieve-video-psp-go-in-actie
It shows the rest of the show (including the PSP Go! in hands) and he also tells that they'll be using...
*Drum rolls*
Memory Stick Micro...
And luckily I'm not the only one who thinks that this thing looks hideous.
same. no dual analog, no buy. i'm waiting for that.
Ugliest gadget ever.
I think this is hot
If this is the actual PSP, then I'm heart-broken, Sony!
Yeah, this is one of the worst looking Sony products I've ever seen.. Why couldn't that first render we saw be the actual thing? That thing looked amazing.
http://news.timtechs.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/psp-render.gif
When I saw the picture that revealed that there was only one analog nub, MY HEART SANK.
Wait for the Slim and Lite Version

*Slams head against his desk*
This can't be real! Since this is a modification of the first PSP I can understand not having a second analog stick (better saved for a PSP 2), but this is the most ridiculously ugly Sony product I've ever seen! The Mylo looks a bit better than this, but seriously! And having a slider function just adds more potential for mechanical failure. I've seen many cheap slider phones break apart.
I think I'll buy a DS if I want a newer portable gaming system.
Call me when sony takes there heads out of there ass, and see what there new psp looks like
i wonder how long song will go until they release the Go! 2, or the Go 2000!, or w/e they wanna call the revised unit. cuz this is seriously one of the ugliest devices i've ever seen in my life. why is surprising, because its honestly not that difficult to design a decent looking PMP (which is basically what this is). i mean, for christs sake...the the xperia x1, instead of a keyboard add two analog sticks and 4 buttons...it'd look 10x better than this.
YUCK sony....YUCK. I wanna take some ipecac syrup to throw this up its so disgusting. what has been seen....cannot be unseen.
Here's a hint Sony:
1. Move the start and select buttons to that large empty area above them.
2. Plop in a second analog stick in their place.
3. Make future games dual-analog and laud this PSP's "backward compatibility" with the old games. It's really time to move on...
Aw.. this sucks. I was hoping for something that would compete with next-gen Nokia Internet Tablet and all the Android MIDs coming out at the same time.
it doesn't look that bad but what seems to piss me off the most is that Sony does not want to upgrade the whole PSP platform. I thought they would upgrade the whole thing like adding a faster processor and bringing new and more higher graphic games.
i like the new design
It looks all right. I would care more about comfort than the looks. The sliding thing is okay and all, but it provides no screen protection, unlike the DS.
the classic psp design was sexy, this is not sexy. Give me back sexiness.
They wanted to be ahead of the curve for downloadable content. Seem to me that they're quite a bit behind Apple's curve. They're thinking about digital game downloads now. I wonder why? Oh that's right, they're copying Apple.
They've only got one thing going for them.... Gran Turismo mobile. Drool.
ugly as shit
they haven't learned anything
please Ms kill this poor beast
and no i'm not a fanboy of MS but seriously Sonny must die
i'm disappointed. The original psp looked so much better. This is like a step backwards...
No dual analog
No touchscreen
No digital output/connector (was expecting mini hdmi or something for watching movies on tv)
What is the innovation really????
If this product is going to last 10years then Sony should have actually put a tiny bit of effort in market analysis and give people what they want.
I was looking forward to it but not anymore.
In the gallery, picture 4 of 19, the finish of teh black looks terrible. Liek orange peel. Is it at all possible this is a fake?
http://www.engadget.com/photos/sonys-psp-go-leaked/2044717/
It is laughable and pathetic than a company with the resources of Sony would spend any amount of time coming up with product like this.
You know how people look at something and say "I could have come up with something better than that". Usually that isn't the case because you don't know the complexities of the process involved in creating said product.
HOWEVER, In the case of the PSPgo this is totally true. How long did it take the wizards of smart at Sony to say, "uhhh Let's just put controls on the Mylo and call that the new PSP." What a load of shit. I hope this product is an EPIC fail and Sony is punished for this ineptitude.
I was really getting fired up and excited for the new PSP and then they pull down their pants, squat over the ground and give us this?
What a joke. Fuck you Sony I'm going to buy a DS.
It looks like it was designed to accomodate two sticks with those symmeterical depressions - the start and select buttons (which looks out of place) could then move to the blank area just above.
I can't belive that it doesn't have dual sticks! Very disapointing. I stopped buying new games 3 years ago because I kept buying games that would have played much better with a second stick. I felt like my money was being wasted because I never played those games. And I will not be buying this new PSP. Who cares if it slides open, and is 50% lighter. The only thing that cripples the psp is the lack of full controls. They've had pleanty of times to fix this problem, and its still not fixed. If they want to secure the top spot in handheld gaming, they need to smarten up. The games can be fantastic on the PSP if you had a way to control them.
And I just want to through in that I can't believe that people think that the iPhone is going to be a stong contender for handheld gaming. for really casual, simple games it is perfect for. But for serious games, NO WAY! again, you need a way to control them, and to be able to feel the controls so you can tell where you are.
Very disapointing Sony. Stick a second stick on there, and I'll be first in line to buy one. Until then, I refuse to buy any more psp games.
how can anyone look at this thing and not say its fake?:P it looks EXACTLY the same as the Mylo 2, its only moded slightly, this would be easy to fake!
Altho, it may be real and in that case Sony really sucks seeing how it dosent have 2 anolog sticks, the ONE thing everybody wanted...
U-G-L-Y.
I actually agree with iLoveApple for once!
This looks HORRIBLE. At first, it reminded me of the old NES controller buttons...
M-Y-L-O
Oh gods, it is SO ugly!
I dont think it's really ugly, but the current psp's design looks much sleeker and sexier then this
It looks far, far better in the (much clearer) official press shots. Doesn't strike me as ugly at all.
Apparently, the original design fell off a sony jet into a ugly tree... hitting every branch on the way down... landing next to the ugly tree... where several years passed and the tree grew around the design... thus becoming part of the ugly tree... until recently being carved out.
thats not fair, i think shes quite hot
It has such a cheap look to it, they could have made the screen a WHOLE lot bigger.
PSP Go is "Fools Gold"! Don't worry tech dudes, PSP 4000 will "bring the sexy back" in all of its touch screen Oled glory! So hold on to that 3000 and keep the green powder dry!
OH GOD IT BURNS. And they had such beautiful fake mocks to start from. How could they fail so badly?
It's no uglier than that Palm Pre everyone seems to be oogling over. PSP go looks great to me and I'll be getting one first day they are on sale here in Japan.
I don't know; the more I look at it the less ugly it looks. Actually comparing the PSP-3000 and this side by side, it's not as ugly to me as I initially thought it was. It's probably much nicer in person, especially with that piano black.
I agree that no dual analog is upsetting.
Won't somebody think of the children!!!
Wow, that looks uncomfortable! The buttons on the current PSP are 1/2 an inch higher (in relation to the curves on the sides. ...I see hand cramps in our collective future.
Wow, the buttons are so close to the bottom of the unit. You're either going to have to awkwardly position your thumbs or hold the back of the unit with your fingertips
It looks almost exactly like that artist's render!
Accept his looked better.
@Longshot
I just can't accept it!
The artist's render was much better as a PMP. This looks... like crap.
I was also thinking that the render was so much better looking than this. Sony likes shooting themselves in the foot, don't they? But then again, this might catch on with the younger crowd... and you know how well they drive the handheld market!
Does anybody know who "the artist" of "the artist's render" fame is?
Endgadget should interview them and see what they think of this turd bag.
It doesn't look too ergonomic to play with for a long time.
Yeah, the analogue nub is nearly under the center of the display. How long does your thumb have to be?
I notice the back has what seem to be.. indentations of some sort? Might make it feel more controller like, the main gripe I have playing a PSP at the moment is the way it doesn't fit into my palms, and after a long time playing can get really uncomfortable.
I think the bigger news here is...
He just confirmed a new MGS for PSP?!
That's what she said.
@Vanillacide
Yes, the nub may be in the center of the display, but the display is above the controls. Now the controls are closer together, but the nub seems to be in the same spot as it would be if the display was in between the controls. So I don't think it would be any harder reaching the nub than before.
I tried to figure out the size based on the 3.8" screen size and the photos. I came up with a width of about 4.8" and a height of about 2.5" with controls retracted. Height would be about 4" with controls out. Of course, my calculations might suck.
Anyway, that seems pretty small, closer to a phone size. Definitely more pocket-sized. By comparison, the Nintendo DS lite is about 5.25" wide.
Personally, I like the idea of it being more portable, but I don't know if it'll feel ergonomic.
Eh, that's the best design they could come up with?
I think you can find better looking things at Toys'r'us in the 3-year-old section. Seriously.
I guess it doesn't look TOO bad when it's closed, but when it's slid open my eyes begin to melt.
It takes something bad to really appreciate something that's been around for a while. The classic always looked sexy to me, but now I think it looks even sexier.
I hope this is fake. That analog nub looks uncomfortably placed.
Thankfully the whole device looks small enough to put the nub into perspective... of how cramped your hands will be after 10 minutes of play. I'm really disappointed. *hugs his PSP-1000* I'LL NEVER LEAVE YOU.
I like the artist rendering much better. This thing is hideous.
I agree this looked better in the render. So how about that PSP that plays PS2 games?
it looks horrible
Keep in mind, this is still the PSP 1, there has yet to be a PSP 2.
This is just like going from the Gameboy Advance, to the Gameboy Advance SP.
Same system, different look.
tsk tsk tsk
holy crap, that can't possibly be real. Countdown to carpal tunnel lawsuits in 3... 2...
I had really hoped that Sony would take this change to add dual analog sticks. I'm disappointed with this. :(
There was some talk that it would have a full touchscreen, but that does not look to be the case either. If it was they would be hyping it up on the marketing material.
I think it's a good idea to keep both the new PSP Go and the PSP 3000 on the shelves at the same time. At least then people who have UMD collections and want a new PSP can still get a 3000.
Yeah... and people who like things that don't look like crap can also get a 3000 instead.
same way sony is selling the ps2 and ps3(non-bc) at the same time
hmm They should call it the Game Gear 3000
HEY! got somethin bad to say about the Game Gear? come and say it to my face!! still beats every handheld gaming device out there, with 6 AA batteries, lithium battery packs with ergonomic hand grips, Mega Gear (basically a giant magnifying glass for making that screen HUGE), TV tuner with a huge antenna and A/V in, I once plugged my xbox into that (you can't compete), backlit display, like three buttons (keep it simple!) and best of all....
SONIC AND TAILS.
believe it or not, i've had mine for about 12 years, and I still pull it out and play Sonic or Sonic Drift...it's just too rich to put down.
Now we know what they did with all those unsold Mylo's- they re-flashed them into Sony PSP's!
QORE FTW.
Too advance lol
Please, let this be fake.
This is beyond fugly. Thanks Sony for helping me save my money cause I won't be buying this ugliness. The features sound decent. The design, however, is hideous. Who designed this? The MYLO Team?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQ-EtvIhFRU
Holy shit! Ok this is either the most elaborate fake ever concocted or Sony has lost their touch. How can they go from the dead sexy PSP and PS3 to this dog turd?
Can I have the artist's rendering PSP Go please? this thing looks horrible, wtf are Sony designers smoking?
Thanks for the vid! Adizzy, btw in that vid, it's confirmed Gran Turismo announcement.
This is just a mockup of what a mylo would look like if it were a psp.
umm....seriously? If this is what the new....that is a psp right? Anyways if that is what the new "psp" looks like then I shudder to think what the new ps3 slim will look like.
On a side note, does anyone else get the feeling this looks like this was designed with toddlers in mind?
That is really ugly!, The current PSP looks better! This is not an improvement and a bad move by Sony.
Sony taking a page out of Nintendo's book?
"turrible"
knuckleheads
notice how it has LBP on the screen
but anyways, this thing is nothing like i expected from sony
OMG!... no way! This is just a nightmare, right?
Just look at the analog stick... yup carpal tunnel for sure!
I agree this looks nothing like a Sony. Is the screen bigger than the regular PSP or is it the same?
it's smaller
