Here is the thing though, everybody seems to make a huge issue of Vista running a bit slow but when it is Leopard it isn't even mentioned. Apple has done some serious improvements with the latest patch for Netbook Owners. It even cuts the boot up time down by a minute. Now it's just over 40 seconds... which all in all isn't bad! While I love Apple's industrial design, OS and user interface prowess, and the iPod/iPhone line, The arrogance they show with the Mac computer line is mind-blowing. Not only is the ridiculous average margin continuing to grow, but their business practices are getting increasingly worse insofar as leaving in outdated components for far too long, anemic basic configurations, purposeful obsolescence, etc.

Here's the deal: OSX is definitely extensively tested and verified on the specific hardware in use in Macs, and they certainly create customized hardware drivers and firmware, but the hardware components themselves are the very same generic, high volume parts that other vendors use. And although most of the time Apple uses the latest Intel CPUs and platforms, they also can lack many features of other premium-priced computers and can at times use very outdated components - particularly GPUs.

some key examples:

- Previous to the latest revision, Apple's Macbook ($1100-$1500) and desktop Mac Mini were both using crappy integrated graphics from Intel. Worse, the Mac Mini was using a 2-year old chipset with the GMA950 when two newer generations of Intel chipsets and integrated graphics were widely available!

- Previous to the latest revision just recently, Apple's iMac was actually using graphics cards from ATI's ancient 2000 series while the TWO-GENERATIONS newer 4000 series was widely available! And the only upgrade was to an equally old card from Nvidia's 65nm 8000 series!

- Even today, the newest iMac comes standard with Nvidia 9400 integrated graphics on the $1200 and $1500 configuration! Thats lunacy! Even the most expensive $2200 model only comes standard with an Nvidia "GT130" (a REBRAND of the "8800 GS" from the OLDER model) and costs extra for a Radeon 4850 ---- which is only available on the two most expensive configurations.

- Their current Macbook doesn't have Firewire, eSATA, or an expresscard slot. Many would argue that it is not critical for average users to have these features, but I would offer that for $1500 it should have them.

loosely_coupled

Comments on Dell's Mini 10v gets unboxed, cracked wide open, fitted with OS X

"Keep convincing yourselves that it was worth that extra $1000 for the Apple logo."

with a MacBook running $999... can you point me to the PC laptop that is available for -$1.

sounds like a steal. literally.

010111

Comments on Dell's Mini 10v gets unboxed, cracked wide open, fitted with OS X

I guess apple was the first to use intel right?

yakapo

Comments on Dell's Mini 10v gets unboxed, cracked wide open, fitted with OS X

@Miles et al...

The only thing I agree with Miles on is the "Apple experience". Gucci, LV, Armani...etc... are a waste of money for people who just want to cover their bodies up... and that those name brands don't worth the extra $$$ nothing is wrong about that. But you gotta give apple credit for being able lead the computing world beyond just plain white black box to something relatively more enjoyable to look at and to use (depends on where your standards are). And Apple further created its own multimedia ecosystem that for now MS can only dream of. On the other hand, I wouldn't say Mac nowadays is that much more expansive than the other brand with the similar specs. Except Apple seems like to keep the product options to the minimal (which is both good and bad) and so that the geekier customers who likes to tinker their own hardwares can hardly be pleased.

I personally moved from windows pc to a Mac mini to now having my own hardware that runs osx.
