I could just type in the channel number...2 or 3 digits, or I can wave, flick my wrist several times then jam my fist into some imaginary button...yeah, much simpler!

So what happens when I move my hand to grab my drink and change the channel missing a vital play in the game I'm watching? Do I have to swaddle my child who'll obviously be running around oblivious to the new control system, changing the station without knowing about it? how do you translate single button actions to a gesture? What's the gesture for "mute"? How tedious will fast forwarding and rewinding be?

This is again a solution looking for a problem to solve. All this movement to touch and gestures. I used a touch screen all-in-one at PC-World...it suddenly dawned on me after 5 minutes that I wanted to put my arm down. My hand rests on the table when I'm holding a mouse...why would I want it suspended in the air when all that moved before was a couple of fingers and a slight wrist rotation? How is scrolling through a list easier by waving my whole arm up and down when that's a replacement for a slight movement from my index finger?

Tes

Comments on Canesta gesture controlled TV frees us from the tyranny of the remote

So, this is like what Tosh did with SpursEngine.
Also.. you've basically got a webcam in a TV, and probably internet connected also - can you image the opportunities for voyeurs if someone finds a way to hack these things?

simbr

Comments on Canesta gesture controlled TV frees us from the tyranny of the remote

Nice ripoff from the ms Natal

Alex

Comments on Canesta gesture controlled TV frees us from the tyranny of the remote

What happens when you hook a Wii to it and try and play a game? No EPG makes this thing less than useless. At least they could have had something on the screen that showed what was playing on the selected channel. This way you just have to go to a channel and wait for the commercials to end to know what's on. Worse than useless. However, this is a prototype, and they've got to implement lots of features besides the channel changing gesture. If i read it correctly, the sensor is a depth-sensing device, which could for example get gestures just with a finger. I suppose that the waving/sliding hand gestures was appropiate from a cinematic point of view, imagine this teaser where the users just moved a finger, it would be even useless. Go on there, flame my comment :-P

JohnVillar

Comments on Canesta gesture controlled TV frees us from the tyranny of the remote

I need this NOW! where can I get it?

heng

Comments on Canesta gesture controlled TV frees us from the tyranny of the remote

The guys at http://www.mgestyk.com do a lot more with gestures.

l33tness
