I remember my dad bought his first entertainment system. It was a JVC 32" tube television, a JVC progressive scan DVD player and full 5.1 surround sound system. He still uses them in his guest room of his house.

It's too bad they couldn't keep up with the demands of technology in the LCD / Plasma age. As for 'glorified laptop screens', please. LCD displays look f***ing great these days (and even laptop screens are not so awful as they used to be). Maybe plasma is better in a couple technical ways, darker blacks or whatever, but who really cares.

OLED will be great but to be honest it's probably more about the power consumption and lack of backlight, and the design opportunities that come from that, than just the picture quality/contrast improvements.

Not necessarily. Depends completely on your situation. On your wall, yes, it would make a difference when looking from a side angle. Just walk into a Best Buy and look at all the TVs they have mounted on the wall. As you approach the wall it's hard to tell any thickness differences between most of them. Sure, once you get up close and puposely looking at the side the difference is clear, but even then you're going to spend most of your time look at the front anyway.
