They lose money on consoles so sales don't matter. They make up for it in inflaflated prices on software.

Nintendo is making money on all hardware. That means the Wii, Wiimotes, plastic mario kart shells. All of it. How many soccer moms do you think bought extra controllers for all her kids? MS and sony do peripherals too, but Nintendo is king there. On top of all that the 50 million consoles attract developers who buy liscences. They still get a hefty chunk from game sales.

Saleswise, yeah, Nintendo won this gen by a lot. It's kind of insane actually how badly they shut down MS and Sony. MS and Sony have to go into a new market and try to cope with it and re-invent it on their consoles. Nintendo on the other hand has the console that supports motion as well as software titles that do. Their only shortcoming is the image quality. Since Nintendo has had all this success in sales and profits and for a really long time, they must have developed something for the future or at least worked on ideas. It is a smart move for them to wait for the competition to announce their plans.

Now Nintendo only has to push a little forward. They can slightly improve on their controllers to be better than Sony's. Although MS's are still better, Xboxes are still aimed at the hardcore gamer and not someone's granma. Also very young children will still love the Wii more since it gives them ingame control that doesn't require them reading a manual or practicing key combinations that aren't already part of their muscle memory.

As for the hardware, Tegra anyone (just a thought). Well probably not Tegra but my point is here also Nintendo only needs to upgrade with something that is cheaply available nowadays. To come to the Xbox's level the Wii can add some graphics and will unlikely add Blueray since downloads are catching up. This is enough to get in a larger demographic than the one Nintendo covers today. To get a view of what hardware can be added to the Wii, take at look at low-end to mid-range notebooks that play games and consider you have better than that in the Wii because you won't be paying for an LCD screen, a battery + charger, and a plethora of ports and hardware standards.

Don't forget that the technology used in motion control is built in-house and this is where all the weight lifting happens. However graphics capabilities are bought from external sources. So internal engineering is way less. For now MS and Sony have to reinvent the wheel while Nintendo has to push forward incremental improvements. That's my opinion and they can have more in store.

Generic

Comments on Miyamoto "not worried at all" about Sony and Microsoft's motion controllers

He doesn't have to be worried until these are built in. Remember we are only two years away from their next console which he probably already knows the basics of it at this point. As they start to get games for Natal into the market - Nintendo will be close to releasing Wii 2 which will most likely use HD Stereoscopic technology - projecting graphics all around your room in 3D space. I would be willing to bet that is the direction Nintendo will go next - they have the motion sensing - the next logical step is to revolutionize the way we view the graphics in the same way they revolutionized how we use a remote control.

aweyrich

Comments on Miyamoto "not worried at all" about Sony and Microsoft's motion controllers

"projecting graphics all around your room in 3D space"...

Really? so in two years are we also gonna be flying around in our own personal spaceships and have crazy orgies with strange alien women?

Neil

Comments on Miyamoto "not worried at all" about Sony and Microsoft's motion controllers

@Neil

Hell Yeah

Ebzy

Comments on Miyamoto "not worried at all" about Sony and Microsoft's motion controllers

Oh the irony!

I remember the days where Microsoft and Sony fanboys were flaming the Wii because of its Motion Controls

...now its a different story..

I wonder how Nintendo can compete with Natal and Sony's Motion Controller though, Wii Motion Plus works differently...

zer0suitsamus

Comments on Miyamoto "not worried at all" about Sony and Microsoft's motion controllers

Wii = Requires you to hold controllers

Natal = No controllers

PS3 Wand = 1:1 motion control without Motionplus addon.

Very very different.

Aguiluz

Comments on Miyamoto "not worried at all" about Sony and Microsoft's motion controllers

@Aguiluz

Wii / Wii motion plus = Accelerometer Motion Control

Natal = 3D Full body Motion Control

PS3 Motion Controller = PS Eye Motion Control

All the same category - Motion Control

Definition: Allows you to control certain aspects by the use of motion and movement

zer0suitsamus

Comments on Miyamoto "not worried at all" about Sony and Microsoft's motion controllers

what depth exactly is he even talking about - Wii Sports? lol I mean sure the dude has earned the respect of the game industry but when you're wrong, you're wrong.
