Giving you another foot to stop (suspension and seat compression), you'll have about 33 Joules to dissipate per kilogram that you weigh. (U=mgh)
From 60 mph, you'll have about 360 J/kg. (K=½mv²)
So if you stop from 60 mph in four feet, you shed about 90 J/kg-ft, about three times as much as if you dropped from ten feet and stopped in another one.

So yeah, you *would* rather.

Disclaimer: this is a massive simplification. It treats you as just a free body with no floppiness or preference between, say, spine compression and whiplash. It assumes constant force applied to stop you—which is way wrong—and several other things.
Nevertheless, a factor of 3 is pretty safe, so you're probably still right.

Phred

Comments on Mercedes debuts airbag-laden S-Class ESF hybrid concept

Would love to see the under-the-car airbag in action.

Aaron

Comments on Mercedes debuts airbag-laden S-Class ESF hybrid concept

just run over your girlfriend.

OneLove

Comments on Mercedes debuts airbag-laden S-Class ESF hybrid concept

for the last time, i am NOT running over your mom!

Aaron

Comments on Mercedes debuts airbag-laden S-Class ESF hybrid concept

I'd like to see this "inflatable metal" in a computer or something, lol

iFargle

Comments on Mercedes debuts airbag-laden S-Class ESF hybrid concept

Fenderbender: $800 in repairs. $2500 in braking bag replacement.

Amun

Comments on Mercedes debuts airbag-laden S-Class ESF hybrid concept

Chump change for a retired General like myself...

Besides, its the idiot in the tuner or SUV that causes the damage that will pay $$$

Just make sure you add on the digital Accident-cam when you order the package.. insurance will love you for that.

Big brother much?

General_Trelane, (retired)

Comments on Mercedes debuts airbag-laden S-Class ESF hybrid concept

general must not be in a no fault state

brian

Comments on Mercedes debuts airbag-laden S-Class ESF hybrid concept

I love the No-fault insurance here... How exactly does the car parse the detection of an 'imminent' impact? Seems like it would be prone to a lot of potentially dangerous false deployments. They would be much better off constructing shocks/struts on the front wheel that would LOCK at full height preventing the car from nose diving. It does exactly what you think it does: monitors the vehicles front and rear sensors and when it detects an "imminent" impact, things automatically adjust like the tightening of seatbelts, and the ejecting of headrests, etc to make the impact less severe on occupants.
