If you download the original picture and zoom in on his finger, I believe it's actually amputated. Who knows... maybe he's a smoker.
Its Rahm Emanuel, the Chief of staff. He lost his finger in an Arby's meat slicer in HS.

They agreed he could keep one in the end, they made that blackberry especially for him.

The only "grave mistake" is whether or not the phone is screen face IN. I can tell from the pic, but as someone that knows a little something about cellphones, SCREEN SIDE SHOULD ALWAYS BE FACE IN TO THE BODY. Ask me why...

It has to do with the ability to easily track his location. Pretty easy to take out a target with a global locater attached to his hip.
ok that sounds mildly plausible although I think the president would have the pull to get that turned off. Did you just make that up or is that legit?
i dont get it ...
i believe engadget is pointing to the fact that presidents aren't suppose to have personal electronics such as laptops,phones,etc. this is due to the fact that all communication that the president participate in has to be available to the public.
I read "grave mistake" and thought it was going to be an article about how Obama had left his cellphone on during flight. The mistake being that now the entire world knows that its total bs when they tell you to turn off your phones so the plane doesn't crash. Then I realized that the only mistake I made was assuming this article was about something more important than a damn leather holster.
Only matters if its activated, not to mention we dont know if blackberry has cut a deal to having such a device being made "presidential".
