The problem is, until we know the controller inside, we don't know how the Agility will perform and therefore what to compare it against. Neither is any faster than the other. It depends which model you are looking at. The 120/128 version has faster write speeds than the lower versions. Other results are purely varying test beds. There is a reason the Intel MLC drives are so expensive, and it's because they actually have a fast random-write speed. As noted by many reviewers, the Intel X25M's super high random write speed is completely unnecessary for non-server applications and provides no benefits for consumer use --- while also vastly reducing the X25's sequential write speeds.

While ~1.5MB/sec in random write doesn't seem like much, it is 3X faster than the 10K RPM velociraptor drive and 50-100X faster than the older JMicron drives. IT is plenty of random write bandwidth to avoid the stuttering problem seen with older JMicron controller drives, and that is all that really matters.

Anyone that doesn't believe me, go do your own research. The OCZ Vertex drive is extremely popular, and doesn't experience the dramatic slow-down problem that is seen in the Intel X25, and is 50+% cheaper per GB.

random read write is ALL that matters in the real world.
bullshit test platforms that simulate streaming a video or any other lo IOPS intensive task are worthless.

and also, due to the wear leveling employed on SSD drives at the block level, anything larger than a dsingle block is written RANDOMLY to the drive.
This would include MOST EVERY FILE ON YOUR COMPUTER.

high random speeds also means that real world application testing (like openimg a couple of programs at the same time, or say doing something like playing a game and having the game program also reading ahead to display the next part of the map you are about to come to, happen much better and more seamlessly.

That's why people bought the raptors/velociraptors in the first place, not for overall sequential speed but for the increase in random speed.

it's also why most of the "faster hard rives" spin *gasp* faster!

the more times per minute that same sector comes under the read/write head, the more chances there are to read those random bits scattered over the disc.

random performance is all that matters when testing out real world performance of drives of any type.

unless of course all you do is write single large files to your drive and never change them.

220 MB/s read times aren't much use if an I/O queue greater than unity causes it to fall flat on its face.

Write speed, random write speed, and how the drive handles multiple I/O calls very definitely does make a difference on a desktop: as a boot drive has to handle the swap partition, virus and malware scans, indexing, searches... in short quite a lot of junk.

An SSD is not worth paying for unless it can cut through these kinds of tasks like a hot knife through butter.

Because I am carrying about 150GB of movies, music and other data on my laptop, so switching to the SSD alone is not possible. But the rest of my data, and this is where the SSD speed would really count, can easily fit in 64GB. The operating system, applications, caches, work data... it would all fit in 64GB no problem. The neat thing of having everything and anything on one drive though is that there is no hassle with managing the data. Just one large drive, and one larger backup drive, that's it. No "wait, I know I have this movie you want, let me sort through my external drives"... stuff like that. Yep, I am a hunter and gatherer....
