We've got a number of tips this morning about lucky
iPhone 3G S pre-orderers getting shipment notifications from Apple. Naturally, with a high profile launch like this we're guessing Apple has done all it can to ensure shipments
won't slip through earlier than the June 19th launch date, but hopefully at least few folks will get lucky -- and at least they've got one of the only guarantees of a launch day phone going. In other news, an anonymous Apple Store employee has done some homework and tallied up average reservation numbers at other US stores -- he estimates about 800 people on average are on the reservation list per Apple Store (ranging from a couple hundred to well over a thousand), which amounts to about 200,000 reservations as of now, a number he believes could double before launch. There's no way to back that number up, but it sounds fairly rational. Finally, the iPhone 3G S firmware download link has made its way into the wild. Sure, it doesn't do you any good if you don't have an iPhone 3G S, but we thought you just might want to know all the same.
[Thanks to everyone who sent these in]

I gotta wait till July 11th for my upgrade discount. =(
I ordered mine and my wifes phones through AT&T because I thought that was the only way if you were in a contract. All of you who ordered through Apple.com, are you new users? new accounts? I had the original, so I knew I would need to make plan changes, so I figured ATT.com was the way to go. Going to suck if mine takes longer because I went through AT&T, but hopefully they are all shipping from the same places. Anyone know?
I am a continuing user, just renewing my original contract. I have the same minute plan, but, updating from the original iPhone meant the higher data plan and not text messages included. They had me enter information to access my AT&T account, but at least I know I don't have to worry about lines, or not getting a phone.
TexRob:
I am an existing ATT customer (without the iPhone) and I purchased the iPhone 3GS through the Apple Online Store. Given your situation, you could have purchased it from the apple store as well; it asks you whether you are a new or existing customer and if you want to upgrade a phone etc. If you ordered from the apple online store, you would most likely get it at your front door the day the phone is released. Sorry!
You should try talking with an ATT rep. I was very nice and asked if I could upgrade early and after some talking with a manager I am allowed to purchase the 3GS on Friday for 199 instead of waiting until july 13th. Its worth the effort in my opinion.
only Premier customers have to go through the AT&T. existing users can go through either avenue.
slaves to heartless bastards! sadness
I dont like some things that Apple does, but are they really that much different than any other company. No I am not a fanboy I own Microsoft products, Sony products and whatever else. I just dont get all this hate for certain companies.
Just because you don't like the company doesn't mean they don't make a great phone... I, too, fail to understand why people invest themselves in loving or hating a company. It's pathetic.
I do like Apple and am getting the new iphone at the $399 price, I guess I should have phrased my statement a little different. It seems there is not shortage of hate for any of these companies Apple,Microsoft and Sony. You would think some people would be proud for the most part of Apple and Microsoft especially, as they are American companies that truly compete and actually dominate their foreign competition in a lot of categories. Just my 2 cents.
I ordered mine about an hour after the announcement last Monday. I just checked my order status at Store.Apple.com and it says mine is "Prepared for Shipment".
I have the iPhone 3.0 OS on my iPod and it works like a dream!
Im in the UK and will be getting my iPhone 3G S shipped to me from Carphone Warehouse on Launch.
Mine has shipped :)
Mine has shipped too! :D
Oh wait. My "Product Replacement" iPhone 3G has shipped. Nvm. :(
My UPS notice has updated with a delivery date of the 17th.
So now the only thing I'm hoping for is the Dev Team bringing the Video camera feature to the regular 3G.
Its there its called cycorder
He said 'regular' 3G. Jailbroken is not regular.
Frankfurter, he also said 'Dev Team'.
Pay attention
You sure wouldn't know it was a recession from watching the hype and the number of preorders. Sheesh!
The trick about recession is to chose not to participate. There will always be jobs available and money to be made not matter what. You just need to realize where to make it and adapt!
I chose never to participate in a recession. If I get laid off, I'll find something else to do.
It's only a recession to those that lose their jobs, or are looking for work.
@kjb "I chose never to participate in a recession. If I get laid off, I'll find something else to do."
As someone who was laid off in March (in probably the worst economy in all of our lifetimes) and just now finally found an acceptable part-time/contract position in my field, I'd like to give a hearty "Fuck You" to your idiotic comment. In this economy, when you are laid off it is not so simple as to say "I'll find something else to do." Nobody is hiring right now unless your qualifications match *exactly* with what they are looking for. Gone are the days when you could get a job just because you are smart and motivated, and companies were willing to take months to train you.
Idiotic comments like this show a complete lack of understanding of what is really going on out there. So, I repeat again. "Fuck you."
If you look at it, the whole recession itself is overhyped...
@ Jay
"It's only a recession to those that lose their jobs, or are looking for work"
Or to those who are used to getting a raise every year, or a bonus, or overtime, or at least not getting their pay reduced due to lack of work coming into their profession, or pay more for health insurance, groceries, fuel a car, pay taxes, eat, live like they were only a few years ago...
Let me guess - you live with your parents, right?
My order status says 'Delivers by June 19th' but no shipment notification yet.
Thank god I pre-ordered that shit. Can't wait for friday, I'm pumped.
Going to call BS on this one, I know dozens of people with iPhones and not a single one of them is willing to upgrade to this new one.
Wow! Dozens!? That's totally scientific!
There are some people that have played with other people iphones but decided to not but because of what the original versions were lacking.
The 3GS is actually finally integrating some features people want. Now Apple has expanded their customer base.
@G Tom: About as scientific as this article, which itself states "there's no way to back that number up, but it sounds fairly rational."
Im getting one. There.... now you know one out of a baker's dozen.
Yup good call. This is a BS article. This year's WWDC was a huge letdown.
Hopefully Apple does a little more than add a 3.0MP camera in the next 12 months of R&D
That's hundreds of thousands who'll be upset when they can't get the new iPhone next year for the subsidized pricing b/c of their 2 year contract they're agreeing to.
Very interested to see if they have enough stock for the demand though.
This happens on every carrier, people don't understand "what do subsidized mean."
I saw it last year with the Instinct, and this year with the Pre. The forums fill up with people threatening to cancel their contracts if they don't get the "new customer" pricing.
For those Apple folks that got the "special upgrade pricing" last year... HELLO!!! YOU PAID FULL PRICE FOR THE DAMN PHONE WHEN IT WAS FIRST LAUNCHED!!! Of course you were eligible for subsidized pricing! Apple and AT&T weren't cutting you break. Now that you are only 1 year into your 2 year deal, you don't qualify for special pricing because you are still paying for last years phone.
Welcome to the wonderful world of cell phone contracts.
Yeah...it's not like any of those users will be eligible for a full upgrade price in a year. Oh wait, yes they will...
@Matt
BTW, those that are having to pay full price because of their contract will be eligible for the subsidized price next year.
But yes, those new customers getting the subsidized price now will most definitely be yelling next year about how AT&T doesn't value their customers when they find out they'll have to pay full price for the new iPhone with pull out scissors and bottle opener.
Just checked my ATT account (2 iPhones via Family Plan) and one of them have a upgrade of July 26, 2009 while the other is March 12, 2010. I purchased them at the same time. Anyone else have this same issue?
Yes. Both my wife and I had the original iPhones (although she got hers 6 months after I got mine.) We both upgraded to the 3g iPhone within a week of each other last summer. She's eligible now for an upgrade, and I have to wait until December (but we're not going to buy the 3gs anyway.)
Its because one of your lines is the primary. And depending on the revenue on the primary you get a 2yr upgrade every year. Secondary lines are only billed at $9.99 plus data. So its not generating enough money to get a discount every year.
I'm just going to throw this out there: If you currently own an iPhone 3G, and ordered one of these, you're an idiot.
Care to break down the reasoning for your statement?
I disagree. It's expensive, no doubt about it. I think you can break contract and sell your now out of contract phone and break even. Regardless, there are plenty of people out there that make enough money or use their current iPhone enough to justify any upgrade to this product line with or without contract breaking. I'm too broke to be one of them but the speed increases are welcomed.
WOW bold statment .... I say your an idiot I sold my white 3G unlocked and making 100$ while paying $399 heh :) this is a MAJOR upgrade and not just for the camera.....
Yea you could break even, or close to it lol. I am upgrading from the 1st gen iphone so this a big ass upgrade for me. If i had a 3g it might not be that worth it to upgrade. I usually upgrade every 2 generations. But if next year the iphone is totally changed, you damn right I'm getting it somehow.
I'm an idiot huh? I guess you're too stupid to have sold your current 3g for $400? More than makes up for the upgrade.
@Steven
I am doing exactly the same thing. Craigslist FTW!!
@Steven Shvartsman, as much as I think hexydes is flame-baiting, and don't really agree with him (I mean I keep buying SE phones, which are basically the same, but oh-so slightly updated), how can YOU say it's a major upgrade?
A faster processor? is it needed? faster 3g? Not many telcos can handle that speed (in the UK at least), anyhow. Better cam? Still not a major upgrade. So, what's so major about the upgrade? The flashing icon?!
unlocked iPhones 3G 16GB are going for over $500 on eBay craigslist and etc... People are just funny, oh cuz it looks the same as 3G its not a major upgrade? this is the big upgrade higher CPU, RAM, Video Accelaration, 3G Radio, Compass and Camera ? The jump from original iPhone was the small upgrade the only things that were changes was the back of the case and 3G radio and people went crazy for it, but because iPhone 3G S looks the same its not a major upgrade ? Am I missing something here or people are blind and death ?
@Samo so what would justify a major upgrade in your eyes ?
