Don't forget, when the iPhone was first released, it also was limited to web-type apps (but even then, apparently, that was the greatest thing since sliced bread as well right?) and the SDK has been available for quite some time too. I wonder why apple even cared to release iPhone 3G S. iPhone is a heavily hyped crap gadget like all other apple products. The most basic features are still being waited for. I have owned an iPhone and used it for quite some time, along with an iPod touch. I learned the ins and outs of the iPhone OS. I use PC's only because I can not afford a Macbook. But I have used Mac OS X extensively through school.

The iPhone is touted as a multimedia device, and is therefore marketed as such. A play thing. Marketed to the masses. 50,000 apps, most of which are games and other widgets that replace things that can be looked up on the web (ie, stocks, twitter, weather, converter, etc.). It's simplicity is also appealing. While I am a Sprint customer, I naturally was drawn to the Pre. And another reason is that it was made to get stuff done (like its child company Nextel's motto). It's multitasking engine, along with the way it gets stuff from the web through synergy (not to mention its keyboard) is made for doing things and maximizing downtime.

Your points on what the Pre doesn't have (when compared to the holy Jesus iPhone):

8 GB memory limit - Didn't the 1st generation iPhone have this as well? This is the 1st Gen Pre.
No true apps - only webapps - Same argument for the 1st Gen iPhone. And there are true apps: Match, Pandora, Nascar, Flixter, GoPayment, Classic, Craigslist, Bank of America, etc.... this is only the beginning.
No voice and data at the same time -This is a CDMA limitation unfortunately. I have never found a need for it anyway while on the road, and while in range of an indoor WiFi network, I can have the same benefits.
No voice dialing - I'm sure that this will come in time in an update. Again, it took iPhone OS 3.0 for it to emerge.
No video recording - Coming soon. See above.
No voice memos - See above.
No movie rentals - This is something you're gonna use like what, once? A phone is to make calls. Again, the Pre is more of a business device, while the iPhone is a multimedia device, and more of a status phone than an actual smartphone.
No visual Voicemail - Not too sure if I miss this a lot from AT&T. Traditional Voicemail is, well traditional. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Also, check out www.youmail.com for Visual Voicemail similar service.
No TV show rentals - look above at movie rentals. The Pre can always stream content from the web.
No audiobook purchasing - um, Amazon store?
No true app store (18 is a joke) - App catalog is in is incipient stages. The App Store has had a year to mature. This is similar to picking on a newborn pretty much.
No console-quality games - Nothing yet. Again, a phone is to make calls. It's nice that the iPhone has this feature, but what happens when you drain your battery playing 'console-quality' games and you can't call 911 in an emergency? Leave the gaming to Sony and Nintendo. Tetris and other simple games are fine for me (take a look at the Top selling games in the App store and tell me how many are 'console-quality').
No Peer to Peer games - Oh yea, cuz I'm totally going to wanna play a stranger on the metro/subway in a game that he might not have. Or a friend. Easy way to get that precious device stolen.
No VoiceOver -I haven't seen proof of this. But I can see this being useful in the car for SMS and email messages. That's a good one if it is indeed true.
No native in-car integration - via the iPod cable? Ok ok. Micro usb (USB in general) is a bigger standard though. As well as BT.
No podcasts - Pre can support and play podcasts.
Crippled copy/paste - For now. Again, it took the iPhone the 3rd iteration - the Pre had functionality out of the box.
No universal search - um, yes there is. Go to the email app, or if not, wait for an OTA update (zing!)
Tiny keyboard - Better than having to look at a screen to type...touch typing ftw.
No auto wi-fi login -Proof of this? Most devices have auto wifi login....
No 7.2 Mbps network speed - AT&T's 3G sucks even compared to my EVDO Rev. A on my MOGUL. This is in CT though, your mileage might vary.
No Remote Wipe - Um, yes there is. Palm Profile supports this
No Find My Phone feature - This is laughable at best.
Can't function as a Remote for the household stereo - How often have you actually used this? Also, I can use VNC or a remote client to control my stereo if possible (logmein.com anyone?)
Weak battery life - Not bad for a multitasking phone with a smaller battery. It will only get better with OTA updates (zing again!)
More expensive than iPhone - Not at all. $199 with new contract, and $449 (correct me on this) no contract.
Very scratchable screen - Take care of your shit. 'Nuff said.
No oleophobic protective screen - Isn't this a repeat? Honestly you're just fishing for 'features' here now.
No real music store - The Pre can use iTunes, WMP, Winamp, Musicmatch, AND drag and drop. Pre=infiniti: iPhone=1
No Voice Commands - Meh. I'll give you that. But probably won't be used much.
No Compass - A MUST HAVE FEATURE (sarcasm)
No multiple and customizable home screens like iPhone - Um, what? Icon wise? The Pre can move icons around too, woohoo...at least we have a background that's not only shown on the lock screen....
No Parental Controls - Cuz your kids are going to be playing with your phone that much.
No Video Editing - Maybe an app for this will come to the Pre soon along with Video recording. Then again, this is crippled on the iPhone too (destructive editing).
No onboard Ringtone Creation - Proof of this on the iPhone? Non-jailbreak please?
No 5 person conference calls - Proof?
No Webclips - WTF is that?

Brandon L

Comments on

I think Brandon dashed that list of Ken's pretty well. That being said, there are a lot of wild comments from iPhone lovers and haters around here. The iPhone isn't killing the Pre and the Pre won't kill the iPhone, and the world will continue to spin like it did yesterday - so get real folks. Maybe put more time into enjoying your devices and less into hating the others.

I have the 1st gen iPhone still and was waiting for this new one before upgrading, because yes, I like my phone. Yet, the updates here are not that exciting and I really am not seeing anything that blows the earlier models out of the water. The 1st gen phone works fine with all the software updates, and the addition of a compass and a few other little perks just doesn't make the upgrade seem needed. So, in that respect, I am pretty disappointed this time around. I really was hoping for a little more from Apple here.

Duke

Comments on

Hmmm.. nevermind my previous post. Its a nice phone and all but I personally refuse to pay 300 more a year for the same type of plan just to have a phone. AT&T is the biggest weakness for this device they not the largest or most dependable 3G or voice and yet they want you to pay so much to just have this phone on their network with restrictions...

As a side note this whole Apple vs MS vs Everybody else is silly. Blackberry has just as many devoted fans as apple maybe even more they just don't feel the need to rub their phone in everybody's face. Palm also has a fanbase that is slowly returning most just waiting for the pre or pre like device to be offered on other carriers. If you like apple products that fine do you but stop acting like you superior to everybody else. There will be no Iphone killer just like Iphone will never kill off the blackberry or others and you should hope not competition is what makes better products for us all.

famu324

Comments on

your right man the iphone owns all...by the way Im on my bold right now listening to Pandora downloading an attachment and replying to a text...your iphone can multi task...right?

Bold FTW

Andrew Yanez

Comments on

What??? Nokia is currently the only company that designs their phone and own the Symbian OS. Google Android is similar the M$ business model which they develop the OS but they don't design their own hardware.

See if you can find any app store within other cell phones that contain more than 50,0000+ innovative apps. None of the mobile phones on the market even in Japan contain that many software for a single core device especially within 2 years since launch.

Finally, Apple is ahead of the rest of the mobile phone market. Just when every other company is trying hard to copy Apple to create their app store interface, Apple has just released the API for dev to interface their piece of hardware officially without hacking. That means there are almost infinite possibility for iPhone to expand.

I agree that iPhone's hardware isn't that impressive especially the 3MP camera and no flash. It took them 2 years to have all the standard features that other smartphones have but little bit better; however, Apple is very new to the mobile phone market, they are obviously using a totally different strategy to compete to the rest of the handset makers. When other handset makers are concentrating on competing hardware features such as camera, 3D accelerator, music, etc, Apple is thinking beyond that business model and move on to an ecosystem of how to integrate a mobile communication device into every part of our daily lives via apps store and 3rd party hardware interfacing just like a computer. We know that Nokia has tried to do that, but not really successful due to the interface design is too business and geeky even for the N97. Apple has done a great job to capture the market world wide. Many people move from their Razr to iPhone without experiencing any other smartphones. It is the trend that cell phones are not just phones for talking but pocket computers that integrate into every single detail of our lives.

shinrajp

Comments on

if the kids at Joystiq hate you what makes you think you'll do better here?

maveric101

Comments on

@ shinrajp:

Yep, keep fapping yourself buddy.
