That iPhone OS 3.0 jailbreak we saw the iPhone Dev-Team
pull off earlier this week? It's out now, or at least, part of it is. Pwnage Tool is now flooding torrents, but there's lots of caveats here. Most importantly, this isn't
Ultrasn0w, which means if you're wanting to use your toy on T-Mobile or another unofficial carrier, be patient -- it's also worth noting that the jailbreak doesn't jibe with yellowsn0w, so those who rely on it should stay away for the time being. No compatibility with the 3G S, or at least, it probably hasn't been tested... we wouldn't recommend anyone setting the precedent here. You'll need Mac OS X to run it, with QuickPwn for Mac and Windows coming further down the line. Ultrasn0w is also due out at some indeterminate future, so that all said, if you're just needing right now a jailbroken device with spotlight functionality, hit up the read link for all the pertinent details. It should goes without saying, but they're might a few negative side effects to it, and one of the big ones we heard is that YouTube might be fubar'd at the moment.

I'm using it on my iPod touch 2G and it's working perfectly.
I'm glad to be back.
did you use redsnow or pwnage tool 3.0 for your Ipod touch gen2?
Nobody else hoping they won't release until 3.0.1 comes out? Lots of annoying little bugs in 3.0 that I reckon will be (should be) patched up fairly soon. That'd be even more annoying.
I was having problems with Weather, Stocks, SBSettings and 5 Icon Dock. They all work perfectly now though. Not ran in to any bugs yet and it all seems a lot more stable than 2.2.
Nothing has crashed on me yet. Touch wood....
What's the major advantage in jailbreaking an iPod touch? I can understand the iPhone, but the touch? Don't make much sense to me. Explain.
@Paul: There are plenty of reasons to jailbreak that aren't directly related to iPhone-specific hardware. Cydia, Winterboard, live Clock and Weather icons, Emoji support outside of Japan, SBSettings (a customizable HUD with handy settings switches accessed by swiping across the status bar in any app or in the home screen), numerical status displays, customizable system fonts, clipboard functionality for pre-3.0 OSes, multitasking support (within the limits of available RAM, at least), unfettered access to the file system, a terminal, SSH and VNC...and that's not counting anything I haven't used on my own iPhone.
Thanks for that. I'm planning on buying either an iPhone 3G S or an iPod touch soon. I gotta wait for the new iPod touch though. I'm hoping that Apple puts in a 3G chip and allow touch owners to get a data plan only option. That way I could keep my little Samsung flip phone, which I feel is more convenient to carry around.
I've dropped my little flip phone several times and couldn't imagine dropping an iPhone even once, so the iPod touch looks like a much safer option.
@ Paul. 3G on a Touch? That would be the best of both worlds, which is why it will never happen. We can hope though.
Yeah, it would basically be an iPhone without the phone. Basically, you could use Safari, even when you're not in a Wi-Fi range. I know a lot of people who would buy that in a heart beat. There is also the possibility that you could use the 3G for VoIP calls. And AT&T could charge people $30 a month for the data plan.
But anyway, I agree with you, it's unlikely to happen because IT MAKES TOO MUCH SENSE. And we know how the carriers like to screw ideas that make too much sense.
Have to agree that it would never happen - why would Apple want to encroach on iPhone sales by offering 3G functionality on the touch - doesn't make economic sense (unfortunately)
Uhh, 3G on a Touch would make it an iPhone without bluetooth or a mic, in terms of the hardware. You might as well just buy an iPhone off ebay and get a data-only plan.
Welcome to Thursday's news, Engadget.
I wonder when they plan on telling us that redsn0w has already been released on Windows and Mac for 3.0.
Error in reporting: YouTube is definitely NOT fubared. They were running into problems, but fixed the issue. Everything works.
No, you didn't use pwnage tool on your iPod touch 2g. It doesn't have support for 2g. Redsn0w is what you have to use.
Nice fail
I never said I was using the pwnage tool, I said I was using the jailbreak.
So I don't believe I was the one failing there "goff"
Anthony, you said "I'm using it on my iPod touch 2G and it's working perfectly" in an article about pwnage tool.
So yeah you did say you were using pwnage tool.
And don't confuse it, you fail.
Running 3.0 on my ipod touch 2g... Just when i thought it couldn't get any better.
Steve Jobs gets a liver transplant and this Dev Team does this to him and his company. The Dev Team has some big time bad Karma their way.
Because he does not understand the word "freedom" in the first place.
I'm sorry doc but I have to disagree - the iphone shouldn't be a closed system so the Dev Team should be praised for their good work. If it wasn't for people like the Dev Team I wouldn't even have an iPhone.
So, if anything they've good some big time good Karma coming their way
Well, the article is about pwnage tool...
Clearly, a general discussion involving all of the Dev-Team's iPhone/iPod jailbreaking and unlocking products are allowed, no?
Or do you support Engadget making separate posts for each? People generally hate this when it comes to Apple products. I tend to agree with them.
I'm having issues running Pwnage Tool. It crashes every time in the middle of creating a custom ipsw. Anyone know a fix? I miss SB Settings and all my hidden apps because of Categories.
I'm running a ppc on 10.4.11. I have an original 2g iPhone.
See my previous post.
If you had read some more before attempting to jb / unlock your phone you would have found that PPC is not supported, only intel pc's. Plus, due to some bugs in 10.5.6 it has been recommended to upgrade to 10.5.7.
This only works on Intel Macs.
For Windows and PPC, get redsn0w instead.
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/126908912/redsn0w-in-june
Thanks, I'm going to try redsn0w. But the dev blog says that their having issues with PPC macs which I'm using.
ppc is not supported on either at the moment but way to link something that proves how wrong u were
Yay! Now I can finally get that Battery percentage indicator Apple insists only the 3GS can handle.
May I ask what the name of the add-on you installed to enable that?
SBSettings does that... and a lot more...
I've updated my Iphone and I have the % battery indicator without Jailbreaking my iPhone 3G.
I have the % indicator on my 3g running 3.0 as does everyone else, not sure what you are talking about...
"Tap Usage and turn Battery Percentage on to display the percentage of battery charge next to the battery icon in the upper-right corner of iPhone (iPhone 3G S only)."
http://www.apple.com/iphone/how-to/#settings.usage
If you have the battery percentage enabled on a non-3GS phone, it's some freak occurrence due to left-over files from previous jailbreaking. I've never jailbroken my iPhone 3G, and I don't have it. Apple's documentation confirms it as a 3GS-only feature.
Just for those people using old-skool 2G iPhones, Pwnage tool does unlock it, I'm using mine on Orange now and its working fine.
yup, got my iPhone 2G working fine on Tmobile, Mpls MN :)
btw, the $5.99 tzones plan still gets you full EDGE data on the iPhone :)
Do the new versions of quickpwn support the older devices like 1st gen iPhone,iPod touch or are there specific veersions for each device.
Everything is working perfect for me!
UPDATE: As of 4:00am Eastern Time the Windows Jailbreak has been released. "redsn0w-win 0.7.1"
I installed an IPSW someone else had put together (due to lack of easy access to an Intel-based Mac), so I don't know exactly what settings he used in the build, but I can confirm that on my iPhone 3G, YouTube works just fine. Now it's just a matter of making a few new icons for my favourite themes. :)
Could you PLEASE email me a link to the custom ispw you used because I am also on a PPC Mac. Also on the custom ipsw you used were custom boot logos used (the pineapple) or
was the original apple logo kept? Please let me know. I really appreciate it!
Please email me at 4555057@gmail.com
Thanks again. I was scared to try a custom ispw that was not tested.
I'm having issues with some of the cydia apps though, seems as though some are not patched yet (understandable) or something went wrong with my jailbreak. ToneFX and iRealSMSQuick seem to have issues. ToneFX works on the phone, but I can't get any tones added from the mac applicatation, keep getting iPHUC errors (not a joke name, thats what the error comes up as). Anyone else tried these cydia apps with 3.0? If its just my jailbreak, I'll try it again because these apps worked great under 2.2.1.
the devs of those apps needs to update them to make it fully compatible with 3.0
I've noticed that backgrounder and Status notifier don't work either as they were specifically coded for 2.2.1
don't worry, your jailbreak is fine.
just give it some time and the devs will come thorugh.
Yes ToneFX appears to have some bugs in it and is still not 100% compatible. My ToneFX will not play the customized sms ringtones I have for SOME of my contacts. It appears to be selective in which contact it will work with.
lala~lalala!!
"It should goes without saying, but they're might a few negative side effects to it."
The amount of grammatical fail in this sentence is quite astonishing.
:agree:
Wow. That sentence doesn't even make sense.
Why are itards pwning what they love?
