I've dropped my little flip phone several times and couldn't imagine dropping an iPhone even once, so the iPod touch looks like a much safer option.

If you have the battery percentage enabled on a non-3GS phone, it's some freak occurrence due to left-over files from previous jailbreaking. I've never jailbroken my iPhone 3G, and I don't have it. I've noticed that backgrounder and Status notifier don't work either as they were specifically coded for 2.2.1
