I have the N95 8GB. I've managed to drop it only once (and the last!). It was dropped on a tile floor, and the battery came right off. Thankfully, not a single scratch, chip, damage, etc. to the device. One IR LED and one photo diode. when the phone is near something, the photo diode picks up the reflection of the IR LES in what ever is near the phone. This is a more advanced version of the proximity sensor on the Nokia 7650 (first Nokia symbian phone) that would turn off the loud speaker/hands free when you put the phone next to your head so you wouldn't deafen yourself. Capacitive screen = glass or amorpheous polymer = brittle as hell.
