I do agree, though. I have dozens of mini-usb cables around, so is it really more efficient and better for the environment to discard all of these and switch to a new standard?

How long will it be until portable hard drives switch to this, so I can carry one cable?

More importantly, does this mean new devices will not include a charger? One of the big selling points of standardizing is that less old chargers will go to the landfill. If you get a new device and a new charger, won't the old one be useless? I think this is an opportunity for device manufacturers to halt the inclusion of chargers, and they won't (presumably won't) pass the savings on to consumers.

I'm a huge fan of USB charging. Give me a USB cable and a 5V wall plug adapter. The iPhone/iPods, my Kindle, the Mophie Juicepack guys, and more are starting this trend, and I love it. I can carry one tiny wall-wart around and plug whatever USB cable i need into it to charge several devices. At home, I have a 7-port USB hub that is hooked to nothing. It simply charges my Juicepack, iPhone, Kindle, MotoRockr headset, and more. All from one outlet.

USB chargers FTW!!

jimmy

Comments on

APPLE?

Leindurstit

Comments on

APPLE ? wow .. they must be planing something else to replace their "all is" plug they use now..
Wireless Syncing via Wifi ? :-) yeahhhh

Eastman

Comments on

My thoughts exactly... How about Samsung? You'll find half a dozen different ones, I'll assure you. As long as one can make calls, send messages and e-mail across brands, this "open everything" BS amounts to jack squat.

Trust me, even if every manufacturer uses MicroUSB chargers, they're still gonna bundle proprietary solutions for docking and you're still gonna buy manufacturer specific docks and accessories.
