I've been wanting to get a DSLR for a while but buying one from a retailer who isn't a creepy dude in a NYC back alley has proved to be prohibitively expensive for an unemployed college student on summer break.

If you want to trash your harddrives with those gazillion MP's of the 5DmkII or with MOOOVIES go ahead and buy a mkII, but if you want the best full frame camera for money, the D700 will remain king for a while. I did start with shooting Nikons, and recently moved over to Canon with the 5DmkII.
The overall quality of the images, and the quality/price of the Canon lenses is what'll keep me shooting Canon.
However, the Nikon is much more intuitive in operation, and IMO, much more responsive. Bring on the D300S, then drop the price of the D300. That way, I can upgrade from my D200!
