Max storage for four 2.5" drives is 2 terabytes, while max storage for ONE 3.5" drive is 2 terabytes. If you are in the market for such a thing, why not save a few bucks (and more time down the road) new Acer Aspire Home Servers that can be had on Amazon for $50 bucks less and use properly sized hard drives (and still have eSATA & USB for more) and have a real OS (Windows Home Server) to boot?.

Brendan

Comments on Synology debuts compact DS409Slim four-bay NAS

The AAHS does look nice; more appealing that what HP has been peddling. But, after trying out FreeNAS, NasLite, OpenFiler, and WHS, I'd rather go w/ an enclosure running w/e OS that company puts on it. I know nothing about FreeBSD or linux and setting up the first three OS's on some old mid-tower I had lying around was a pain. I know they could do what I wanted. Making it happen though was a different story.

...and WHS, no thanks. Lacked the controls (esp. w/ RAID), flexibility, and features I wanted that the others OS were capable of. (Heck it even said I had roughly 80gigs less between 5 drives (four 1TB and one 160GB), because it needed one for the OS, than what FreeNAS said I had between 4 drives and a 32MB, yes MB!, flash drive!) And that is why I started looking at NAS enclousers. Small footprint/power consumption. Most are linux based and are relatively end-user-easy to set up. And they come with all the bells and whistles I'm looking for. Such as directory permissions, custom back ups, UPnP, bittorrent hosting & d/l, and so on.

13enS

Comments on Synology debuts compact DS409Slim four-bay NAS

RAID?
