HTC Hero vs. T-Mobile myTouch 3G... fight!
Two long lost siblings, at last reunited. But can there ever be unity? We don't think so. At every turn, the HTC Hero seems to trounce the myTouch 3G -- it's really hardly a contest. The myTouch is certainly lighter, and in many ways "feels" smaller because of it, but the size differences really are negligible. They're still both great phones, but the Hero really feels like a million bucks, while the myTouch feels a bit like a toy. Unfortunately, only one of them just went up for pre-order on T-Mobile, and it's not the one we want to marry.

htc hero looks awesome except for its chin!!!
Actually, I kind of like the chin on the Hero. It gives it a distinct look compared to phones such as the iPhone, etc.
Does anyone else think that the dedicated zoom keys may end up getting in the way?
I have a g1 and i like. the form factor is fine. I don't wear skinny jeans like a bitch, so the chin never bothered me.
with that said, people pounded on the g1 for its chin, but so many people have been talking about the great form factor of the hero, wtf?
the hero looks just like the g1, minus a keyboard
i don't understand you internet, gadget, iphone loving, kids. i guess anything to hate on the new android device i guess
@brandon
No I don't, because it doesn't have dedicated zoom keys. What the hell are you talking about?
2 points here. When the Hero is in your (trouser) pocket, it will naturally sit at an angle and the chin will probably 'wrap' to the contour of your leg unlike the regular candybar/brick/slab phone form. I think it will therefore be quite pocket friendly. Also, I just dont think of it as a 'chin' or being an obtrusive addition in any way. I look at the Hero and think TNG tricorder. To me it looks like a new era of hand held device. iPhone, Omnia, Xperia.. they all look old school and boring in comparison.
The Hero is pushing boundaries, and for the first time in years, I can say that there's a handset I definitely want.
I am loving the hero, even with the chin. It just looks so much cleaner than the myTouch
@chefgon_ign
I do believe Brandon was referring to the key next to the trackball on the Hero that has a magnifying glass on it. I'm not sure it's a zoom key, though...it could be a search key. Anyways, chill out dude.
It never ceases to amaze me how people (commenters on Engadget the internet, in general) are so quick to make others look like an ass by correcting them. Turns out, you are only making an ass of yourself by getting so worked up about it.
AHhh. Nice devices. I can't pick
Damn my Undeniable hate for Google! Nice Phones!
What's to hate about Google? They have:
-One of the best mobile Operating Systems
-One of the fastest web browsers
-Some of the best web apps on the internet
-The best, in my opinion, web e-mail service
-The best, not my opinion, although I also believe it true, search engine available
Why hate Google? They push for open source solutions and have amazing software to back it up.
They keep databases of everything you do, to serve you appropriate ads, and to hand over your entire online life to the coppers should you ever come under investigation for anything.
Google is all about big brothering.
@Sarig
On the copper thing: Source please! I can find sources where MS and Yahoo have done that, but Google fights those requests.
MAGIC still stands a chance to win if it can use Sense UI
myTouch 3G is the stupidest name I've ever heard. T-Mobile should stick to stock names such as HTC Dream and HTC Magic.
What if T-Mobile pick up the HTC Hero (even though it's not a go yet) and call it the T-Mobile myMediaRightNowReallyFastSuperDuperAndroid 4G, would people call it that? I wonder.
Can I get a little shoe on head?
I still think my rooted, overclocked G1 with the hero ROM beats the crap outta them both.
+1 agreed
Your kidding right.
Running sense ui on the g1 is way too slow and laggy even with all those "optimized roms" because the g1 only has 192megs of RAM. A swapfile helps a little, but its no substitute for more RAM.
Plus Bluetooth isn't working, nor are LEDs, plus you get all sorts of weird problems like the radio turning off for no reason that requires a reboot.
Sense UI needs 288 megs for it to be an enjoyable experience.
Please tell me you didn't actually take the time to overclock a G1...
Why do you say that? g1 runs great at 528mhz, at least with 1.5. It really isn't overclocking since the cpu was designed for that speed.
@dfi:
It stands to reason that if 288MB RAM vs 192MB RAM is the only factor in how smooth the Sense UI performs then Sense UI at the minimum uses 96MB of RAM. You seriously want that thing running on your device in that case?
So no, I think there's probably optimizations there for hardware. I really don't think these fancy new UIs are all that RAM hungry. The nifty effects are a function of 3D acceleration/compositing, and little else. It's not swapping that's bogging those UIs down.
@dfi
I'm not sure I agree with you about hardware optimization. Looking at the various hero videos, the UI isn't much faster than a G1 running at 528mhz. Most of the sluggishness is due to sense UI and the incredibly large memory hungry widgets. If you remove the htc widgets, the hero rom runs fairly decent on a g1. If you get rid of the rosie/sense ui/touch flo home screen application altogether and just run the android launcher, the hero rom runs very fast on a g1.
The htc browser, is actually very nice. Better than the 1.5 browser.
A couple of other points. the stock 1.5 rom for the g1 runs at 384mhz.
Most of the custom 1.5 ROMs for the g1 are clocked at 528mhz. In addition, a lot of them incorporate some of the speed-up/optimization patches from the latest android open source repository. And those run incredibly fast.
If you own a g1, I would highly recommend the cyanogen custom 1.5 ROM. Its blazing fast on the g1 and adds a few cool features.

Theres a super optimized ROM of hero on XDA right now, runs great on an overclocked G1
What's the side-by-side tech stats comparison?
The Hero doesn't use the google app store and everything, right?
Its still an android phone the sense UI is an app with special framework and libraries to run it.
yes it does
No keyboard
getting tired of this
You guys want to marry a phone, called Hero?.. Sounds, erm, a bit.. yeah.
I'm waiting for the new HTC Crackwhore, personally.
does anyone know what internal hardware is different (memory, processor, storage) also if their screens are the same size/quality?
cuz if it's just looks, keyboard and camera, i'll take the mytouch earlier.
The G1, Mytouch, and hero all share the same processor I believe, I don't know if theres a RAM/storage difference.
More ram on the hero the same between G1 and mytouch
The HTC standard QUALCOMM 528 Mhz?
That's the only thing that bugs me from their phones. They have been using this chip for *ages* and if I have to sell my soul away for 2 years I need a bit more future-proof processing power.
Seriously. I used this chip in my Tilt (at 400MHz, though) for 1 year and another year in my FUZE. I will be using it for yet ANOTHER year in the Touch Pro 2! I can't wait to get rid of it.
GSM arena (dot) com is where you can find out the info guys/ladies... Don't be afraid to use a search engine once in a blue....lmao
Go to HTC's website, Hero and MyTouch have the same processors RAM and ROM.
No. Please leave.
Yeah, they should have. But the iphone would have gotten its ass handed to it for sure. There's no beating that hero
yea because that's never been done before
i thought this would be an in depth review and comparison between those two phones
So did I. This article pretty much sucks. I'm holding onto my G1 until a clear upgrade becomes available and it has a slide out keyboard.
I agree with Arcaria
Me too. This sucks, I've already seen the pictures.
No, what they should've done is a table comparing the salient features - processor, screen size, battery life, etc. Pictures are nice, but I'd like to know what the specs are for the phones I'm buying.
really do you have to ask?
Which carrier in North America or the United States in general will be distributing the htc hero? Also when is at&t going to release their android phone? I have heard sprint might get the hero. If sprint gets the Hero I will switch to the sprint.
I hope Sprint gets that HERO that would too Sikk or if they Dont i will just Wait for that WiFi/CDMA/WiMax Samsung Android handset combine any of those phones with my PRE and i would be killing off you Idiot Apple Fanboys
Idiotic fantasy nonexistent phones comprised of multiple different phones that actually kill iPhone users.
You didn't take your meds today, did you?
Also, random capitalization is not as cool as you think it is.
