Point by Point:

"For one, its Windows. Even windows on the PC is a shit operating system."
That's open to interpretation, it's not a fact; all you saying that will do is show that you're probably biased.

"MS tried implementing Windows on a mobile device thinking that just shrinking everything physically made sense. It doesnt."
Sure it does! The average Windows user is already familiar with these concepts and the UI; a Windows user knows where most things are in a WinMo device already, more than likely before they even use one.

"Why do I need a strat bar or close buttons on a mobile?"
Well.. you don't NEED anything there sport, but the start and close buttons function with multitasking. You can go to a programs list within any menu, and any program, without having to go back to a home screen or anything else first. And well.. multitasking is a godsend, trust me. RIM users know what I mean.

"Why such a complicated keyboard that forces me to use a stylus?"
Largely, it doesn't, especially 6.5. Obviously, you haven't used one.

"Why is there scrollbars on the sides?"
Uh.. the same reason they're on ALL desktop OS major players, to let you know the length of a list/page, and your position in it.

"Why Why is it so ugly? HTC has done a good job at skining it but underneath its still Windows."
Again.. interpretation. And of COURSE it's still Windows.. if it wasn't Windows, it wouldn't be Windows Mobile, would it?

"Apple did the right thing. They didnt just make a phisically smaller OS X. They worked from the ground up and asked "what do we need this thing to do, and whats the simplest way to o it?" "
Not totally true, plenty of iPhone die-hards, as much as they love it, have complaints about the OS, I hear fairly often "It takes so many taps/swipes to get to settings I'd want at a top-level menu/setting". And there are plenty of complaints about what's NOT on other smartphones that perhaps should be. You've all heard these things before.

"Took the kernel and added an excellent UI on top."
This is probably the truest thing you've said in this post.. even though it's a modified, streamlined OSX kernel.

Facts are awesome, junior. Even windows on thw PC is a shit operating system.
-Wow, that really has some meat behind it, besides the numbers behind users for operating systems...I can agree that Window's isn't the end all, but that is why there are other options...for everyday computing, games, and applications it's the best; i wouldn't doubt that Mac might have it topped for audio/video editting and there are better real time OS's for high speed data acquisition, but for everyday use, Window's is hard to beat.

MS tried implementing Windows on a mobile device thinking that just shrinking everything physically made sense. It doesnt. Why do I need a strat bar or close buttons on a mobile? Why such a complicated keyboard that forces me to use a stylus? Why is there scrollbars on the sides?
-Window's mobile is far more than just a shrunken version of there main OS, if you are refering to the looks (and not the core) they did it so there is less adjustment. The GUI things you are complaining about have been addressed by other manufacturers (HTC), but it doesn't make it bad. WinMo was out before touchscreen so the scroll bars were helpful in finding placement on page...even with it, it helps define that. Keyboard is a function of the device manufacture, sure there is a default one buit into windows, but most manufacturer's have their own or and external one (which is way easier anyways). As for why a close button, its because you actually have the option of minimizing and closing applications giving you the freedom to have any and as many apps open as you want...the close can be configured to either end the app or minimize it btw

Why Why is it so ugly?
-nice opinion

HTC has done a good job at skining it but underneath its still Windows.
Apple did the right thing. They didnt just make a phisically smaller OS X. They worked from the ground up and asked "what do we need this thing to do, and whats the simplest way to o it?" Took the kernel and added an excellent UI on top. Google did the same thing with Android. And thats why iPhone OS and Android take a steaming dump on WinMo
-Its true that WinMo is having market share 'taken' away by other manufacturer's, but competition will do that reguardless. I diagree taht iPhone's UI is the best, if I just wanted an app launcher I could just use the start menu or many other forms (HTC's programs tab on TouchFlo), but i like having default screens with phone, contacts, and text messaging related features (aka the main thing that makes a phone a phone) instead of launching apps. Apple's OS is smoother due to its OS and hardware control (they make the phone and the software), but I prefer winmo's customizing and inherent capabilities

Greg

Comments on

Usabillity aside, windows mobile 6.1 doesn't take full advantage of the snapdragon hardware eg no native support for OMAP3. I'm moving to britain. This is the kind of hardware WinMo needs to operate. The only real gripe one can have with Windows mobile is the UI , the task manager, or lack 1st party app catalog. The UI is up to the carrier or the manufacturer ( blame them if its not layed out well) The task manager I can deal with clearing from time to time and the catalog through Handango is just as good as most app stores. Look at Sonys experia the UI is amazing because they put time in to it.

I'm running an android device and with all the lag in multitask or even just getting back to the home screen/ loading widgets this is the processor I'm looking for. a less then 10 mm thing phone with a 1 ghz processors for free is unbelievable. Many applications still use a stylus-based UI, and frankly just aren't designed as well for mobile phone use as those I've played with on my Pre, or the IPhone. And frankly, style does matter at least a little--while HTC does a good job skinning the shell, the applications all look like shit and are often not terribly intuitive to use. WinMo's Calendar is a great example of why WinMo is behind every other smartphone OS even with 6.5's pretty overlay--it's just not as smooth or easily navigable as the Calendar on other smartphone OS's

billobob

Comments on

I too have a Touch Pro, and although I respect your opinion, I have a different opinion. I do not own the iPhone because it is too feature deficient for my needs. I do have an iPod touch to experience mobile OS X. I actually prefer the Windows Calendar app to the Apple calendar. With the Touch Pro, I have 2 soft keys. The left soft key toggles between views (day, week etc), and the second is a menu with a plethora of options including beam via bluetooth. What I also prefer is the option of scrolling future dates by pressing the hardware navigation bar, and not flicking the screen in list view, or pressing the arrow on the screen to advance other views which is the required on the iPod touch. Yes, I do miss hardware control buttons, and definitely prefer them to screen controls. Wish the iPhone/touch had a hardware, or virtual page down button. I use the calendar app on the Touch Pro without a stylus, and rarely use a stylus at all with the Touch Pro, or any of my older WM PDA's.

One of my favorite PIM apps is Pocket Informant. With WM, you use the built in calendar data with Pocket Informant, but Apple does not allow Pocket Informant to use the built-in Apple calendar data. You have to use the built-in Pocket Informant calendar data, or sync with Google calendar due to Apple's restrictions. With WM, if I don't like the built-in app, I can purchase a third party app that uses the same calendar data that other apps use. With Apple, if I don't like the built-in calendar app, or find it limiting, I can now purchase third party apps, but must maintain a separate data source.

Again, I respect other opinions, but I do prefer the WM apps. Yeah, it would be nice if the icons etc. were bigger on WM, and you can get 3rd party apps that "out-iPhone" the iPhone.

engadget

Comments on

The Toshiba device looks real nice, and I like the bigger screen. I still use a 2003 era Toshiba e830 4" VGA screen PDA daily. I do have newer devices, but really like the look, feel, and overall experience of using the e830. If the new device is as well built as the prior Toshiba PDA's (owned the e550, e740, e750, e800, and e830), this device will be a workhorse. Also, PPC 2003 is very finger friendly on the e830 due to the 4" screen. I rarely use the stylus. WM 6.1/6.5 should be even more finger friendly on that huge (by smartphone standards) screen.

engadget

Comments on

Nice handset but 2 years on Orange = huge fail.

Do not sign up for 2 year contracts people, it is your fault I had to change from a 12 month to 18 month last time I upgraded, longer contracts suck.

pedro

Comments on

youll be able to get it free on a £45 18 month contract

derekblankmccoy
