There is no disputing that high end headphones are much, much more capable of high fidelity audio (A goes in, A goes out) than any pair of 15 dollar headphones. They are also capable of sound stage (spatial separation of instruments, vocalists, etc, and their location relative to each other) that cheap headphones can't touch, and that comes closer to real speakers than anything else. What I've found to be true though, is that most people simply won't notice the difference between high fidelity (audiophile) headphones, and non-audiophile headphones, which makes explaining the audiophile market difficult, especially when you are explaining it to non-audiophiles. Go to head-fi, and read the hundreds of posts made by people desperately trying to figure out why their brand new 300 dollar headphones sound worse than their old junky headphones, and the posts made by audiophiles trying to explain that audiophile headphones often need separate amplification from a headphone amplifier before the headphones will sound their best. Just like how you shouldn't use composite cables on a 1080p TV, you shouldn't plug 300 dollar audiophile headphones into the headphone jack on your computer (this fact alone is what often kills the hopes, dreams, and motivation of aspiring audiophiles. The realization that they need a 200+ dollar amplifier to drive their brand new 300 dollar headphones is far too much for them to bear)

As for the 7000 dollar price on these, Woo Audio has always priced their equipment out of the reach of normal people, and this is no exception. Their profit margins are high, but they have to be since the market is so small for this type of thing. This 7000 dollar bundle might sound 5% better than a setup costing $1000. In turn, a 1000 dollar setup might sound 5% better than a 500 dollar setup. At the high end of the market, you are spending a fortune for every tiny increase in performance that you'll get out of your audio equipment. My entire setup cost approximately $1000 including headphones, DAC, and headphone amplifier (using my computer as a source). I've heard setups that cost thousands more than mine, and they didn't sound very much better (if at all) than my setup.

I guess if there is a point to my ramblings, it would be that you can get an incredible music listening experience for not a lot of money, and it will beat the pants off of any 15 dollar headphones you may have around the house.

BananaBoat

Comments on The $6,910 "best" headphone sound system: how can you afford your audiophile lifestyle?

@sacapuntas - I meant to mention that the SR-60's can easily be powered by a portable player.

I've yet to find a pair of headphones in the sub 200-300 dollar range that simply couldn't be driven by portable players. It's only when you get into the high dollar range that you run into high ohm (100-300 and beyond, compared to 32 or less on most cheaper headphones) or low sensitivity headphones (like my beloved K701's that are low ohm, but still are in desperate need of an amp due to their low sensitivity) that really need a headphone amplifier.

At the low end, all an amp will do is raise the volume, which does nothing for the quality of the audio. An amp, combined with headphones that don't need an amp, could also lead to blown headphones which won't work any more (I've seen it happen before).

For further research, I suggest head-fi.org, or headphone.com. head-fi for reviews (and arguments) by (hopefully) unbiased and trustworthy sources, and headphone.com for a one stop look at what headphones are out there, and what they might cost (even though Amazon might have a better price).

BananaBoat

Comments on The $6,910 "best" headphone sound system: how can you afford your audiophile lifestyle?

I'm a real audiophile and i like my music pre and crisp and clean. A good solid state, high damping, simple A or AB amplifier using quality components destroy anything that uses tubes.

Oh well, I guess I need to remember that the same people running tube amps are usually the same people who think 4th order band pass designs are the greatest thing since sliced bread, and enjoy their 3' horns with smiles on their faces, while listening to scratched up vinyl on their $8,000 solid-brass turntable. I just don't understand it. Audiophile indeed...

Meanwhile, I'll continue living in my nice little niche of the audio world with my sealed box, low MMS/ Qts drivers, ribbon tweeters, and nice solid state amplifiers that actually have some control over the cones with minimal distortion, and an unfortunately small SACD and DVD-A collection.

Matt

Comments on The $6,910 "best" headphone sound system: how can you afford your audiophile lifestyle?

i can dig it

Paul Corlatan

Comments on The $6,910 "best" headphone sound system: how can you afford your audiophile lifestyle?

i can dig an Audi R8 but i sure as shit ain't gettin one

kojo87

Comments on The $6,910 "best" headphone sound system: how can you afford your audiophile lifestyle?

these are perfect for my mp3 collection. I've spent a fair amount on audio gear myself over the years (not *that* much, but not that far off total between three full setups), I make less income, and with just some lose budgeting, it still hasn't really impacted my savings (pretty much ready with a down payment on a house). When I increased my spending on audio gear, I decreased my spending on computers, sold a bunch of old stuff, and kept tabs on what I really had to spend then picked what I felt was the best bang for the buck (which most people would still find excessive). It also really helps to get more involved in the audio community, go to local meetups, and buy things used, because you can get great deals, even for the top end gear. I bought a lower end Stax setup a few years back for less than half it's retail value, barely used (~$600) - suddenly making it a lot more practical. Oh, and it sounds amazing :)

devwild

Comments on The $6,910 "best" headphone sound system: how can you afford your audiophile lifestyle?

but that is *points to Kia Forte*

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbtboWLD64w (commercial for Kia Forte)

googleadam

Comments on The $6,910 "best" headphone sound system: how can you afford your audiophile lifestyle?

Audiophile headphones are sweet. I own a pair of Sennheiser 650s, and for my portable stack, I have a pair Audio Technica ES7's. They're both ridiculously enjoyable to listen to. This stuff is completely justifiable if you really passionately love music. However, 6000$ on a headphone set up is something I'd never do. Thats definitely not even something portable. You might as well just get a sweet bookshelf setup at that point.

andrew autopsy

Comments on The $6,910 "best" headphone sound system: how can you afford your audiophile lifestyle?

But what are the chances of the bookshelves sounding as good?

But I agree this is a tad pricey for what it is.
