I'm one of those people.  I can tell the difference, but I don't really care. Small is always good; it uses less space, it's better suited for small devices (Micro-USB being another example) and it decreases manufacturing costs. In terms of DisplayPort, the Mini variant also has the advantage of having a very unique form factor. The normal DisplayPort connection can easily be confused with the similar looking USB.
