Problem is, using glasses is too inconvenient for it to be adopted, which is why there's tech coming out so you don't need glasses. If anyone is familiar with the cross-eyed method of viewing photos in 3D(which you can select from the youtube video), you'll see that what results can be truly impressive. That method works by crossing your eyes, until the two center images merge into a middle one. Check out this photograph for an example of how detailed 3D can make images look: http://www.flickr.com/photos/themusicoflife/2289885289/sizes/l/

Actually, this entire group has some amazing 3D images: http://www.flickr.com/groups/62553512@N00/pool/

In particular, I like this one, it really shows the depth you can get. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3515/3727995585_40648e0a42_b.jpg

napylopez

Comments on

Am I the only one who can't do these at all? Since the 50s, film has attempted to provide audiences with an experience they could not get from their TV sets. Hence the introduction in that decade of widescreen and color. Both of these technologies had existed decades before television, but it was only when TV became a competitive factor did Hollywood begin to exercise them as regular options. Likewise, stereoscopic systems have existed since at least the 1910s, but never caught on due to their pure novelty factor. Now that people can watch movies in their homes at visual quality near that of a film print and audio quality identical to the master, studios are once again hoping to leverage a new technology against falling ticket sales over the last decade (notice that the 3D glasses you get when you go see "Up" or what have you are labeled "RealD" in an attempt to differentiate the experience from consumer HD.) Studios are desperately trying to make 3D work this time around and indeed the implementation of the effect in 3D films has been far less obtrusive and more mature than past incarnations. Unfortunately for Hollywood, consumer tech has caught on to this and hence the rise of methods to view 3D in your home.

Team_Alex

Comments on

Is there some technical difference between each set of colored glasses?

Brian

Comments on

Yes, they absorb/transmit light of different wavelengths differently...

LondonConsultant

Comments on

Red/Blue, Green/Blue, Pink/Green and some of the others just use a color mask. Two pictures are shown in two polarisation states just like the red/blue method. Each eye on the glasses filters the light so you only see the image polarised in its way. Hence your eyes see two images, each from a slightly different perspective (just like when looking at real stuff), and your brain pieces it together to make 3D.

If anyone here goes to see Ice Age in 3D, check out the animals fur.
