It may vary from campus to campus, but I know of very few people that go to the library without their laptop (like to type an essay or do research with librarian's assistance). When looking for a computer for college, I listened to this notion of "laptops are essentially as stationary as a desktop in college so just get a desktop because it's cheaper" and I learned quite the contrary. I've had a lot of group assignments requiring a computer and it's a real pain to be the one without a portable one.

Any college student looking for a computer, definitely invest in a laptop or even a desktop/netbook combo as long as you have a portable computer.

derX

Comments on Best Buy gears up for back to school crowds with Next Class-branded laptop series

Good deal for the uncool, unwashed masses. Keep in mind that block aluminum and CNC milling are expensive as well (even in bulk/mass production) and make for a very solid, light, compact, and good looking system. I was laying it on pretty thick.)

Consumers don't care if one laptop can "put to shame" another laptop. Didn't the megahertz myth die a long time ago? All people want is a laptop that they can use... and I haven't met any regular person that is crazy about anything that Windows offers. Or that they care if they have 2GB vs 4GB of RAM. Or that they're worried if they will run out of hard drive space. They just use Windows because they've always used Windows... regardless of system specs. Most of the time they are bitching because their computers are slow due to spyware and stuff. But all my Mac friends use iPhoto, edit movies, back up with Time Machine, actually use their webcams, etc... and they are HAPPY with their computer. WLPG and WMM just give users the simplest options. Geek Squad is not the only option for PC users, as you could always take it to a small independent place and get it fixed pretty well without it costing a lot, if something wrong happens. Lines for support at the Apple store have gotten pretty long you know.

"But all my Mac friends use iPhoto, edit movies, back up with Time Machine, actually use their webcams, etc... and they are HAPPY with their computer. That's wrong. There are many decent and great PCs out there to choose from, and people generally don't have as much issues when they go for more top-of-the-line stuff, that aren't necessarily Macs. If you buy a cheap Dell or HP or whatever, with cruddy internals, then of course you're going to be frustrated. If you buy perhaps an XPS, or a Vaio, or Lenovo, or whatever, you'll have better quality and less frustration. It's that obvious, but people are suckered into the Apple ads and think Macs are the only quality computers out there, which is stupid thinking. I've had friends with PC and Mac problems alike. Macs can have issues, and you can dig up a ton of article and go through forums to see what I'm talking about. Seriously, if you're the type of person that connects PC to being equivalent to Dell, then you shouldn't be making comments.

Quikboy

Comments on Best Buy gears up for back to school crowds with Next Class-branded laptop series

@Quikboy >> "You do know there's more professional media editing software for Windows, right?"

Yes.
