Most applications can be installed via a download now, I see no reason why the OS cannot be installed via a memory card or even a network download, and movies can be bought/rented online. When it comes to the likes of movies/TV shows I am even less sad to see the back of the DVD drive since playing them from the hard drive (particularly if you have an SSD) means that your battery will last much longer.

As far as this article is concerned, the addition of the DVD drive is a step backwards, in my opinion, and you might as well add other legacy technologies.

Kelmon

Comments on ASUS Eee PC 1004DN lands in Taiwan, gives the netbook a serious identity crisis

I'm addicted to buying CDs, so for me this is useful. Are DVDs old technology? Absolutely. But so what? No matter how many anecdotes you provide and no matter how you feel about social behaviour, the fact of the matter is plenty of people still use DVDs. Here's an anecdote of my own: just last month I went overseas on business and a client gave me some information on a DVD. This is not uncommon. This is the real world. You may not see it, but it's there.

I will be happy when everyone finally does away with optical discs.
